THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2013 QUOTE OF THE DAY "Here fans fill red-and-blue bleachers from the floor to window-lined ceilings, creating an ambiance that is so retro-perfect it staged. The place looks much more like the set of a Disney movie." PAGE 7 Doug Ward ESPN.com FACT OF THE DAY Allen Fieldhouse opened on March 1, 1955. AN TRIVIA OF THE DAY Q:How much did it cost to build Allen Fieldhouse? THE MORNING BREW A: $2.5 million Kansas basketball ignites Jayhawk spirit Before becoming a Jayhawk, there were only two things I was absolutely sure of about basketball: the ball is orange and I'm about a foot too short to play. Basketball season is among us, folks. I can say that with confidence now because last night, I experienced what everyone gets so amped up about. "There's just no way to describe it," people would tell me. A light flickered in their eyes, mirroring the reflection of the bright lights on the glossy court. I observed that same light in the eyes of 2,000 loyal students, when we should have been sleeping at 6 a.m., as we waited patiently during lottery on Monday morning. The cheerful mood didn't fade yesterday; my classmates bobbed their knees in anticipation. However, I, a transfer student straight from Cali, was clueless. Like a wide-eyed doe, I followed a crowd to Allen Fieldhouse minutes before the floodgates opened. Camping groups huddled together tightly and I quickly forgot about my claustrophobia. The leader of my group promised that elbows would be thrown as we hustled to claim our spot in the bleachers. Nobody warned me that running in damp Toms would be the real hazard and I nearly slid onto the court. Once our belongings were spread out to save seats, the present students around me began shredding newspapers into little bits. The journalist in me soon got over it and the sports fan in me was easily convinced to contribute to the handfails. Should've brought my paper cuter. Confetti filled the air at tip off and fluttered over us in the bleachers. The party had started. A vibrant energy captivated every A violent energy capriated every fan and, at one point, I could've sworn the dribble of the ball matched my pulse. I began tensing at every arm wave, ball toss and change of direction Wiggins and the other white jerseys. Without fail, a heavy stillness filled the Fieldhouse as foul shots sailed into the net. Whoosh! Flashback to March, I was visiting campus with my dad. It was a Saturday and the streets were clogged with traffic. People walked by clad in spirit wear and we exchanged unknowing glances It was true what everyone had said. Absorbing the applause and joyful shouts of a full house can only be experienced. I was surprised to see my arms shoot into the air at every three-pointer and I even resented the guy in front of me ob- structuring my view. I did the math each time the gap of the score widened, hopeful for a higher digit. Along with every other fan, the 97-57 score made me proud to be a Jayhawk. Congratulations. You've all made my ears bleed. Bleed crimson and blue, that is. See everyone next Tuesday! The Miami Heat responded to both. Shane Battier went 4 for 4 from 3-point range, including a critical one from the right corner with 1:33 remaining, and the Heat wasted most of what was a 25-point lead before holding off Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls 107-95 on Tuesday night in the season-opener for both teams. LeBron James scored 17 points for Miami, which got its 2013 NBA championship rings in a pregame ceremony. The Heat trailed 9-2 early, then outscored Chicago 52-24 over the remainder of the first half. Rose finished with 12 points in 34 minutes in his first game since a serious knee injury in April 2012. Carlos Boozer had 31 points and seven rebounds for Chicago, which got within eight points in the final minutes. But Battier's right-corner 3 — a staple for the Heat — snuffed out the comeback, and Miami wasn't in trouble again. Chris Bosh scored 16 points, Battier finished with 14 and Dwyane Wade and Mario Chalmers each had 13 for Miami, which had seven players score in double figures. Ray Allen and Norris Cole each scored 11 for Miami. Rose shot 4 for 15 for the Bulls. Rose shot 4 for 15 for the Bulls. By halftime, Miami was rolling, up 54-33 — putting the game on pace for a 108-66 final, which would have exactly matched the score of the game in 2006 when Chicago came into Miami and spoiled the Heat franchise's first ring night. A layup by Butler with 5:34 left got the Bulls within 15, and after he missed the ensuing free throw, the rebound made its way to Kirk Hinrich — who made a 3-pointer Not this time, though the Bulls made it plenty interesting down the stretch. that cut Miami's lead to 91-79. that cut Miami's lead to 91-79. Hinrich fouled out on the ensuing Miami possession, and Rose checked back in with 5:14 left after spending the entire fourth quarter to that point on the bench. Wade scored seconds later, the Heat followed that with a stop, and James simply overpowered Luo Deng in the post on the next trip to restore the 16-point lead. But again, the Bulls weren't done, cutting the lead to 95-87 on a drive by Boozer with 2:47 left. They would get no closer, and Miami held on despite giving up 37 points in the final quarter. Rose's start was promising early, with two early drives for impressive scores. The Bulls led 15-10 when Rose checked out for the first time with 3:36 left in the opening quarter.
