PAGE 2B TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2013 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN QUOTE OF THE DAY "A lot of people are saying he's the best player in college basketball. I'm saying how can you be the best player if it's something you haven't even played in?" -Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State FACT OF THE DAY Wiggins has a brother named Nick who plays at Wichita State. TRIVIA OF THE DAY THE MORNING BREW Camping for exhibition game may be a stretch Q. Where did Wiggins attend high school in the U.S.? A: Huntington Prep W.V. Can someone please explain to me why I was up at 5 a.m. yesterday to go sit in Allen Fieldhouse for an hour? The sun was not up, nor were my Eggo waffles warm, but I still got up to put my butt in a line to cram into the Fieldhouse. Who knew that an 18-year-old kid from Canada would make a whole school go boy band crazy. Back to the original point: camping for an exhibition game. I may be a sophomore, who is still learning the ropes a bit. But last year for an exhibition game, you could walk in shortly before game time and get a half-decent seat. Yet yesterday, close to 2,000 fans showed up to lottery to run the chance of getting awesome seats to see Pittsburgh State play. When I say Pitt State, though, I really mean Andrew Wiggins. And when I say Andrew Wiggins, I really mean watch him play a few minutes, and then watch Tyler Self and Niko Roberts attempt to get the ball up the court. I would completely understand camping for a Wichita State game, or maybe some other big feeder town school, but Pitt State seems like a stretch for me. The underlying message is that we are putting a lot on Wiggins. I mean, the kid hasn't even put on a jersey yet, but that is what the media is telling us, so we don't get our hopes up if he isn't LeBron James. Don't get it twisted; the kid has freak athletic talent. No one showed up last year to watch Ben McLemore play in a exhibition game, or to see Jeff Withey crush some unsuspecting low.Division I point guard in front of his parents. We will be sitting in the Fieldhouse on a Tuesday night, with classes in the morning, to watch a team we didn't know had a basketball program take on Wilt — I mean Andrew Wiggins. You ask any sorority girl, any high school jock, or even your math teaching assistant what (or who) they are going to go see tonight. They are going to say, the 18-year old Canadian superstar, Mr. Winning. 18-year-old Canadian superstar, Mr. Andrew Christian Wiggins. Monday No Events GOLF Men place 4th at UTEP invitational bburch@kansan.com BEN BURCH The Kansas men's golf team finished the fall season on a positive note at the UTEP Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational last Friday and Saturday with a three-round total of 854 (-10). This was their best team score of the year, and put them in fourth place out of the 15-team field. According to coach Jamie Bermel, the team still has not reached its potential, but this tournament was a step in the right direction as they enter winter training. "I thought we played pretty solid from top to bottom," Bermel said. "We're still not where we want to be, but were certainly making progress." Sophomore Ben Welle led the team in scoring with a final score of 209 (-7), which tied him for sixth place individually. Sophomore Logan Phillie also had a solid tournament, tying for 16th, his first time finishing in the top 20 this season, with a 214 (-2). had good tournaments so I'm sure they'll feel good about the finish they had," Bermel said. "Hopefully this tournament will give them some confidence entering the winter." Logan Philley and Ben Welle Because most of the players on the team are new to Division I golf, Bermel attributes the team's steady improvement to the experience the players gain after each tournament. "It's just one more tournament under our belts with these new kids," Bermel said. "We're trying to get more and more comfortable out there and get more and more experience with every tournament." Although they will not play in any more tournaments until spring, the Jayhawks will still be working hard until then. "There are several guys that need to get stronger... so if the winter goes right, hopefully they can put on seven to ten pounds of muscle," Bermel said. "We're still not where we want to be yet, but hopefully we can have a good winter so we can be in a good spot when spring starts." ASSOCIATED PRESS —Edited by Sarah Kramer GOLF McIlroy beats Woods in exhibition ASSOCIATED PRESS HAIKOU, China — Rory McIlroy won for the first time this year even if it was an 18-hole exhibition against Tiger Woods. Mellroy made four birdies and an eagle over the last seven holes at Mission Hills for a 6-under 67, giving him a one-shot win over Woods. It was the second straight year Mellroy has defeated Woods at the medal match in China. "I would like to play all my tournaments in China where I can beat Tiger, "Mellroy said. Even an unofficial win has to count for something. McIlroy beat him last year at Jinsha Lake under far different circumstances. McIlroy was a major champion, No.1 in the world and on his way to sweeping all the important awards. He signed a lucrative deal with Nike a short time later, and this season has been a struggle. McIlroy has had only one reasonable chance to win a tournament, and he didn't even qualify for the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour. He is using a new driver and a softer golf ball, even prompting Woods to say to him after one chip, "How did you do that?" The banter was free and easy, mostly about equipment. Woods was trying to recover from a virus he picked up from his daughter, and spent most of the afternoon asking his caddie for cough drops. The golf was spectacular over the final hour on the Blackstone Course, however. Woods had a one-shot lead and hit a marvelous approach to 10 feet on the par-5 12th. McIlroy followed with a long iron into 5 feet, both made eagle. They both made birdie on the 13th, and McIlroy caught him with a 6-foot birdie on the 14th. Tiger Woods, center, and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, left of Woods, are surrounded by Chinese golf fans during an exhibition match in Haikou, in southern China's island province Hainan, Monday. They birdied the 16th to reach 5-under, and the match turned on the next hole. Woods came up short on his approach to the 17th, and after nearly flying his pitch into the cup, he missed a 5-foot parut putt. Woods had a 20-foot eagle putt on the 18th for the tie. He missed, and McIlroy knocked in his 3-foot birdie. Woods could hardly raise his voice after the round. "I don't sound all that well now, but it was nice that it was warm out there today," Woods said. "That certainly helped because I think my fever broke and I can start feeling a bit better. But I tell you what, when you have kids, they bring home some strong bugs, and this one has definitely been kicking my butt for the last couple of days." Mellroy was headed back to Shanghai for the HSBC Champions. Woods is skipping the World Golf Championship, and will play next week in the Turkish Open. "I've seen a lot of promising signs over the past few weeks in practice and also in competitive play," McLloy said. "I still have four tournaments left until the end of the season and I would love to finish 2013 strongly and give a little bit of momentum going into next season. But I think as I showed out there, I'm hitting the ball well. "If I can just get the putter going a little bit more, then in these last four tournaments I can hope to contend and maybe pick up a win or two."
