PAGE 28 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2013 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN QUOTE OF THE DAY THE "in you talk to him, he's about as humble and low-key a guy that deflects attention as much as anybody we've been around. But when you hear those things, it's not fair. It's because he's not that. I don't even know of one player that I can think of that he's 'like that guy'. He's just Andrew." Bill Self on Andrew Wiggins comparisons, Kansas City Star FACT OF THE DAY The KU men's basketball season starts in only six days on Nov. 29. TRIVIA OF THE DAY Joel Embid, a seven-footer from Samarron, has only played basketball for two years. THE MORNING BREW Big 12 media day adds to Wiggins hype The hype about Andrew Wiggins continued to grow at Tuesday's Big 12 Men's basketball media day. The anticipation for the season is nearly unprecedented. That is the definition of hype eemed. Much of the excitement comes from inside the university, which was seen at this year's Late Night in the Phog festivities, where several thousand students and fans were turned away because of how quickly Allen Field House reached capacity. That is the demotion of hype. But there's another kind of hype surrounding this season, and it comes from outside the University. Wiggins was universally upended upon for the top spot on ESPN's top 100 last year. Before he announced his decision to come to the University, people were already referring to him as the next Lebron James. Everyone who has an interest in college basketball is eager to see how Wiggins will perform this year. It isn't only Wiggins, however. Most of the Jayhawk team is brand new. Seven of the 18 players are freshmen and most of last year's team is nearly as unproven. Last year's much-talked-about recruiting classes included freshmen Wiggins, Frank Mason, Wayne Selden Jr., Brannen Greene, Joel Embid, Conner Fankamp and transfers Tarik Black and Hunter Mickelson. Memphis transfer and senior Tarik Black and sophomores Perry Ellis and Jamari Taylor return with the most experience, which still isn't a lot. "All we've really done is basically tell our guys there's been some pretty good players here before you that have proven their ability and how they can impact a program, and none of you guys have worn more a bucket coat." to the Kansas City Star at Tuesday's event. and here on you gagged, even made a basket yet," coach Bill Self said Only time will tell how the team performs this year. It will no doubt take some time before this team starts to really gel and performs to the very high expectations that the media and fans have bestowed upon them. Senior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoc recorded her fifth block of the match during a third set loss. This wasn't just any block. This was the block that placed Jarmoc into Kansas history. After the point, Jarmoc didn't celebrate the point more than normal, just a regular pointer finger that indicated she's number one. I honestly couldn't even tell you which block it was when I broke the record," Jarmoc said. "Individual records are great and everything, but I always want to contribute to the team." Jarmoc became the Jayhawks' all-time career block leader, but she was not worried about the record. She was worried about getting the win. Jarmoc surpassed Amanda Reves to have sole control of the Jayhawks' career block record. Jarmoc has blocked hundreds of balls over her four-year career, but none were as special as number 515. With the match on the line, Jarmoc had two key blocks at the end of game four to send the match to a fifth game tiebreaker. Both of those blocks symbolized the importance of Jarmoc's presence. Jarmoc ended the game with a team-high six blocks, but the Jayhawks lost in a tight game that went down to the very last point. The Jayhawks (16-5, 6-2) lost 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-16, 13-15 to Iowa State. "Jarmoc would rather take a W tonight, but her record speaks volume of her effort over four years," head coach Ray Bechard said. "A demanding position, the middle blocker, and the effort it took out of her. I'm very proud of her" Blocker wasn't the only role she played. Jarmoc was a vocal leader on the court and from the bench. Every time Jarmoc substitutes out of the game, she slams her hands against a metal beam on the back wall of the court. Jarmoc said she makes voices to show support for her teammates on the court. "It started during my redshift freshman season obviously," Jarmoc said. "I wanted to contribute any energy I could, and I was standing at the end of the bench, found the beam and made a lot of noise. That kind of stuck with me for those five years." Beachard thinks jarmoc is a great player that gives everything she has. "You're going to hear her voice throughout," Bechard said. "She's a confident kid and she leads by example." Jarmoc, was a part of the first-team All-American selection last season, had to credit her histi- ric career to someone special. Jarmoc's parents were a big part of her success, and the coaching staff has had an affect on her career as well, she said. "Being young and being taught to grind stuff out, I was blessed with amazing coaches." Jarmoc said. "Coach Bird, the middles coach, she really pushed me until I was really dead at times." Jarmoc started her career as a redshirt freshman, and has been a leader on the team ever since. If someone would have told her she was going to lead Kansas in career blocks she wouldn't have put it out of the realm of possibility. "I would have said, 'let's see about that.' I still have a lot of time," Jarmoc said.
