MOVIE REVIEW 'Escape Plan' gives action for everyone For all intents and purposes, prison isn't a place most people want to be. It's cramped and confining, and orange jumpsuits flatter no one. In "Escape Plan," though, it's Sylvester Stallone's job to get into the jumpsuit. Ray Breslin (Stallone) makes his living by breaking out of prison. He works for a high-powered security company that specializes in testing for security flaws in various prisons across the country. Breslin like a prison Houdini, breaking out of prisons left and right... until he gets put in "The Tomb," a violent, questionably legal maximum-security prison where the government's worst enemies are kept. Breslin believes that it, like all the other prisons, will be a breeze to escape from. When he finds out he can't escape — and someone doesn't want him to escape — the situation gets tricky. In hopes of getting out, By Maddie Mikinski mmikinski@kansan.com Breslin joins forces with Swan Rottmayer, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Together they must find a way to get out before someone gets them. Needless to say, "Escape Plan" has an interesting premise. Breslin's profession is an intriguing one we haven't seen before, which helps spice up the plot. Prison-break movies aren't exactly rare, but "Escape Plan" does a good job of adapting the typical plot into something new and different. Breslin's story is imaginative and every twist is genuinely surprising. If "Escape Plan" has a drawback, it's the "action movie-ness" of it all. Breslin and Rottmayer may as well be carrying neon signs that read, "We have lots of testosterone and even more machine guns." It seems the writers are doing everything to tell us that these guys are extremely cool and we should be totally in awe of them. Yes, this is an action movie, but "Escape Plan" is so different from other genre offerings in its premise that it should have striven to be different character-wise, as well. Of course, this won't be a problem for action movie fans. Their heads will still be spinning over the Stallone/Schwarzenegger team-up. Which, admittedly, is genius. Not just for action fans, "Escape Plan" is a movie for anyone. It's got a great story with great actors who are excellent at what they do. It's light on the violence — no one dies in the first hour! — though the language leaves something to be desired. In the words of Arnold; "Get to the chopper" and go see "Escape Plan" for yourself. COMMUNITY Colder weather brings fall fun Edited by Sylas May critter@kansan.com CASSIDY RITTER With the change of weather, it may be tempting to sit inside for days watching Netflix, but consider other options, options that are ideal for fall. Haunted Houses The Haunted Farm, located at 1029 N. 1156 Road, is a spooky experience and a quick 15-minute drive from campus. However, it is only open three weekends this year: Oct. 11 and 12, Oct. 18 and 19 and Oct. 25 and 26 from dark to 11 p.m. Another option is Halloween Haunt at Worlds of Fun. This attraction has mazes, rides and haunted houses. Halloween Haunt is open Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday Oct. 27, starting at 8 p.m. If the spools of Halloween aren't up your ally, try a pumpkin patch. Schaake's Pumpkin Patch, located at 1791 N. 1500 Road, has free admission along with free hay rides. Schaake's also has pick-your-own-pumpkins, hayrides, a hay maze, a photo area, farm animals and the straw romp. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gary's Pumpkin Patch, located at 5991 17th St. in Grantville, is a 20-minute drive from Lawrence and has an eight-acre Corn Maize. A ticket online is $10.66, and the patch is open Fridays from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. Running Looking to stay fit and active? Try running or walking a 5K. During the fall season there are multiple 5K runs and walks to choose from. The Monster Dash 5K is Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The run will be at City Market in Kansas City, Mo., and costs $30 for an individual and $25 for a team. Sunday, Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. is The Jogging Dead: Zombie Survival 5K at the Lied Center. This 5K is $10 with a KUID and $15 to the general public. Another option is the Turkey Trot on Nov. 2. This 5K costs $30 per person and will be held at Woodlawn School, located at 508 Elm St. Football For a cheaper alternative, grab a group of friends to play flag football. The weather is perfect outside and won't stay that way for long, so take advantage of it. Another option could be to throw a party for the next Sunday Night Football game. Crafting With holidays quickly approaching, craft fairs are a great event to attend, even if it just is to get ideas for holiday gifts. Lawrence will be hosting Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 17 at the Community Building, located at 115 W. 11th St. This event is free to the public and open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. So stay away from the temptations of Netflix and enjoy some fall activities. —Edited by Hannah Barling PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY GEORGE MULLINIX AnDa Union The Wind Horse Experience the return of throat singing and vibrant strings from the Mongolian grasslands STUDENT TICKET DISCOUNTS! lied.ku.edu 785-864-2787
