Work Already Begun in Basement —Bid Includes $150,000. The University regents let the contract for the new engineering building to the Manhattan Construction Co., last Monday. The successful bid was $84,000. The price includes plumbing, heating, ventilating, and electric wiring. $16,000 will be spent for apparatus. Next year $50,000 will be used to erect a laboratory near the engineering school. The new building will be 186 feet long and 63 and 92 feet wide at the ends. Cottonwood Tree Is Gas Plant. Professor Bushong of the chemistry department this summer discovered that growing cottonwood trees produce a high grade of natural gas. He experimented by driving tubes into the heart of the tree and lighting the gas which issued from them. The gas burns with a bluish flame and is richer in hydrogen than ordinary natural gas. K.
