Wiechert said the meeting focused on the planning of a final version of a contract with Universal, the company that submitted the lowest bid on the project. "We made sure the building plan reflects the ideas that we have been discussing for the past nine months," he said. "The goal of the figure that will be in the contract." The center, which will be on West Campus, will replace Hoch Auditorium as KU's performing arts center. Construction has been delayed because a contract had to be negotiated, Wiechert said. "This is a little different from projects that are bid through the state, where you have a firm bid in hand," he said. "Because the center builkt entirely from private funds, we had to negotiate a contract." Groundbreaking ceremonies originally were scheduled for Jan. 19, but contractor was delayed because contractor bidder original the budget of $13.1 million. Chancellor Gene A. Budig approved a $1.25 million increase to the budget Feb. 19, but plans for the center still had to be revised. Wiechert said that seating in the center's auditorium was reduced from 2,300 to about 2,000 and that the budget cuts reduced because of the budget cuts. Construction of the center will be financed by a $10 million donation from the Lied Foundation of Omaha, Neb., and other private gifts, he said. The University of Kansas Medical Center received accreditation for the next three years from the Joint Commission. The University Healthcare Organizations, the Med Center's administration office announced last week. A survey team visited the Med Center in August and received accreditation, effecting Aug. 22, 1990. A purse and its contents valued together at $40 were taken between 11 p.m. Friday and 1:15 a.m. Saturday from a KU student car in the 400 block of North Second Street, Lawrence police reported. The passenger window was broken, causing $500 damage.
