NATION AND WORLD University Daily Kansan, November 28. 1984 Page 13 Troops sent to disperse angry mobs By United Press International SANTIAGO, Chile — Troops fanned across the capital yesterday to curb mass protests, as the military government harassed reporters and annulled the credentials of all foreign correspondents. The protests came after 13 bomb blasts, including a car bomb near the presidential palace, rocked Santiago Monday night. No one was reported injured in the explosions. The government of President Augusto Pinochet deployed troops on the streets of Santiago and announced it would call up army reserves to combat the two day protest called by groups opposed to military rule. Meanwhile, soldiers confiscated reporters' notebooks, exposed photographers' film and erased videotape at gunpoint. Video cassettes were confiscated from television crews of ABC News, the British Broadcasting Corp. and the London-based news agency UPIFN. THE GOVERNMENT INFORMATION office also announced that press credentials issued by the office during 1984 had expired, effective Monday. The move affected only foreign employees of foreign companies or workers of the information office, said the credentials were revoked to conduct a revision and eliminate "false credentials." It was unclear what effect the revocation would have. More than 150 correspondents, both residents and visitors, were in Santiago yesterday to cover the first organized protest against military rule since a state of siege was imposed three weeks ago. Those reporters saw opposition politicians and students defy the state of siege by staging demonstrations in the city center and on university campuses at the start of the two-day protest. SOLDIERS ARMED WITH automatic weapons fired warning shots into the air to scare away demonstrators, who set fire to rubber tires in the streets of a militant slum area called La Victoria. An army helicopter repeatedly buzzed the impoverished neighborhood, hovering 30 feet over a wooden parish church where Mass was being said by French-born Catholic priest Pierre Dubois. Regular troops in jeeps and armored vehicles patrolled most working class districts of the capital, and in some slum areas soldiers in combat gear and blackened faces sat in hastily dug trenches. Police rammed a water cannon across walkways in the city's business center at midday, firing jets of water to disperse several hundred demonstrators who chanted antigovernment slogans. The protest was the first called by opposition groups since Pinochet imposed a state of siege Nov. 6 in a move to stop a mounting wave of unrest and violence. FRAUGHT WITH FINAL FEVER?
