CAMPUS AND AREA University Daily Kansan, November 28, 1984 Page 10 2 residents air gripes at meeting By CHRIS BARBER Staff Reporter Two Lawrence residents made full use of the "public comments" section of the Lawrence City Commission agenda last night, raising concerns that caught the interest of commissioners. George Schmitendorf, 1211 Kentucky St., objected to the "wholesale robbery of public parking" in the city. Schmitendorf cited a recent commission action that removed three "The City Commission is taking away public parking in areas where it's needed," Schmitendorf said, citing other areas in the city where he perceived this to be happening. angled parking spaces on the west side of Kentucky Street near the 901 Kentucky Building. This action was taken in conjunction with the approval of a site plan for an extended parking lot for the building. ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER Mike Wilden reminded Schmitendorf that the City Commission had the right to control parking. Mayor Ernest Angino told Schmitendorf that the parking had been removed for safety concerns, because the angled spaces forced drivers to back out onto a busy street. Commissioner Nancy Shontz said she agreed with Schmitendorf's comments about decreasing public parking in Lawrence, but disagreed with his solution. "You want to have the city streets as parking lots," Shonz said to Schmitendorf. "I would favor off-street parking, using the alleys, or possibly stricter parking requirements on site plans." Another resident, Steve Cochran. Route 3, raised complaints about City Prosecutor Mike Glover. Cochran said that Glover had used "selective prosecution" by issuing Cochran a rule requiring judges within 150 feet of another house, which is against city ordinances. COCHRAN ALSO COMPLAINED about Glover's record in general as city prosecutor, a matter that city officials suggested he take up with city staff In other action, the commission approved a site plan for the Nurseries Apartment Complex, which will be located just east of the Lawrence Holidome. The plan calls for a 40-unit development with four main buildings. There will be 16 one-bedroom apartments, 16 two-bedroom apartments and eight studios. The site plan includes expanding the small Kansas River tributary that runs behind the Holidome. Commissioners raised concerns that the owners of the property maintain the stream and provide for erosion control to prevent flooding problems. These requirements were added as conditions for the approval of the plan. Now . . . at BOTH LOCATIONS 10% OFF All records & tapes Downtown 930 Mass. Mon.
