University Daily Kansan, November 28, 1984 CAMPUS AND AREA Page 8 900 will vie in Special Olympics About 900 athletes will compete in the Kansas Special Olympics East in Lawrence Friday, the Kansas Special Olympics executive assistant said yesterday. Betty Boone, the executive assistant, said that teams from the eastern half of the state would compete in bowling, skating and volleyball. The bowling competition will be at Royal Crest Lanes, Ninth and Iowa streets, Boone said. The volleyball tournament will be in Robinson Gymnasium and the skating will be at Fantasyland, 3210 Iowa St. Several hundred volunteers are needed to help with the day's activities, Boone said. A victory dance and banquet will be Friday night in the Kansas Union. Boone said. Bill Towns, operations manager for the Kansas and Frank R. Burge unions, said it was one of the biggest and most complicated events to take place at the Union. More than 1,200 people -- including athletes and volunteers -- will eat at the banquet. Towns said, and immediately afterward the Union staff must clear the area for the victory dance. This is the third year the banquet and dance have been at the Union. Kansas Special Olympics was created in 1970 by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation and is financed through donations. Special Olympics also sponsors summer games, basketball tournaments and softball tournaments, Boone said. Applications for Student Senate office positions and committees are now available in the Senate office, on the third floor of the Kansas Union. Office position applications are due in the office at 5 p.m. Friday. No deadline for committee applications has been set, said William Easley, student body president. All students may apply. Student Senate positions available Four office positions are open: treasurer, administrative assistant to the treasurer, executive secretary and administrative secretary. the treasurer and administrative assistant oversee the use of Senate money and keep Senate finance records. The executive secretary manages the Senate office and takes minutes of Senate meetings. The administrative secretary performs daily office tasks. Easley said the Senate would hire an administrative secretary on a full-time basis for stability and continuity in the office. This month, President Executive Committee decided to make the position full-time. The Senate pays the officers. The treasurer, the administrative assistant, and the administrative secretary each receive about $250 a month. The executive secretary receives about $200 a month. But those salaries might change next semester, Easley said. He and Jeff Polack, student body vice president, set officers' salaries, with the approval of StudEx. The Committee Board, made up of five senators, will choose members for the Senate's permanent committees. They are the Cultural Affairs, Finance, Minority Affairs, Eighth and University Affairs, committees. The Elections Committee is a permanent subcommittee of the Rights Committee. Mamas Mon..
