SPORTS November 27,1984 Page 10 The University Daily KANSAN Health was key to Steiner's race By CHRIS LAZZARINO Sports Writer KU cross country runner Brent Steiner went into the NCAA cross country meet last week expecting to do well under one condition. However, the condition was one Steiner had found difficult to control throughout his career — competing while healthy. "By the way I had been running all year, I felt I could achieve my goal of being an All-American, which meant I had to be one of the top 25 American inmates." Stemer said yesterday. "I was proud I felt all right, I could be in the top 15." "I felt that if I was at my best, I could be in the top five and maybe be right up there. I wasn't 100 percent, but I was feeling the best I had for three weeks, so I knew I would run all right." Steiner did come through with a seventh place finish and an All-America ranking, which didn't sur- runs many people who had seen him run this year. But for many of the coaches who had known Steiner and been aware of his three-year battle 'I felt that if I was at my best, I could be in the top five and maybe be right up there. I wasn't 100 percent, but I was feeling the best I had for three weeks, so I knew I would run all right.' Brent Steiner SKI Steiner KU cross country runner with injuries, Steiner's strong finish was a bit of a surprise. "It was funny, a lot of coaches didn't know what to expect," Steiner said. "Most of them asked me whether I was going to All American and I just said yes. But I had thoughts of finishing in the top 10. No one knew how I would run, but I knew I would run a good race." One of the obstacles that Steiner thought could get in the way of his finishing with the leaders was having to compete with experienced foreign students. That wasn't appropriate for American schools. That wasn't much of a problem, however. "There were fewer foreigners than I expected." Steiner said. "That was probably due to a number of reasons. One reason may have been that the rule that went into effect four years ago that took one year of eligibility for each year the athlete is over 20 may have taken effect. "Also, some may be going into road racing to make money once they get to America. Texas El-Paso, which usually wins nationals, wasn't there because the coach got in trouble for setting up a trust fund for runners. That team is all foreign runners and they were all declared inelegible." Now that Steiner has made it through his most successful cross country season of injury, he is out to be a top outdoor distance runner. He said that he would compete in indoor track this winter but that his goal was to do well nationally in the outdoor 10,000 meter race. "I plan on competing in indoor track and do well." Steiner said, "but I am not going to train specifically for indoor. I am going to concentrate on the outdoor season and make sure I don't get hurt. I just rise my calves on the track today and already my calves and shins are sore." Steiner said the team was training on the track in the Anshutz Sports Pavilion. "They say that track is softer than the one in Allen Field House, but I not sure yet." Steiner said. "I have never had problems with my shins and I am better on the first day. I guess I just have gradually work into indoor track." United Press International Oakland A's designated hitter Dave Kingman is shown taking a swing in a game during the 1984 baseball season. Kingman, who had 35 home runs and 118 RBI, was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year yesterday. By United Press International NEW YORK — Dave Kingman, who had 35 homers and 118 RBI for the Oakland A's last season after they picked him up for the bargain price of $40,000, was named the United Press International Comeback Player of the Year in the American League yesterday. Kingman, who is a free agent, received 14 of a possible 26 votes, easily outdistancing Cleveland pitcher Bert Blyleven, who had five wins in pitching. Mike Witt and Kansas pitcher Moldie Willie Wilson drew two votes anew. The balloting was conducted of UPI baseball correspondents from each major league city. The New York Mets released Kingman last year even though they would have to pay his $635,000 salary. Kingman then caught on with the A's and delivered the power that had him than one of the best sluggers in hosebelt. and am looking forward to an excellent year next season with whoever I'm playing for." Kingman said through his agent Jack Childers Kingman, 35, has played for eight major league teams, twice leading the league in home runs. He entered a season with 356 career home runs. Like most sluggers, though, he strikes out often, and his glove is not as strong as his bat. When the Mets acquired Kelvin Hernandez during the 1983 season, it cut down on Kingman's playing time. He hit only 13 homers with 29 RBI, and the Mets jet him go. Picked up by the A's, Kingman began launching his patented high drives. "If you look at his at bat performance in 1983, you'll see his performance was not that poor," said Oakland vice president Sandy Anderson. "We decided to give him the opportunity to hit on a daily basis." UPI names Kingman AL comeback player "You have to be surprised when a paper ties the team RBI record and hits a home run."
