City approves bonds for new parking lot By SCOTT LANDGRAF Wednesday, November 14. 1979 Staff Reporter The Lawrence City Commission voted 4-1 last night to approve the issuance of $10,000 in bonds. The money will be used to build a parking lot near the new city hall on Sixth Street, near the intersection. The parking lot, which will have 30 spaces, will be built at 600 Massachusetts St, the site of the Fat City Toy Co., owned by Brian Anderson. Anderson said that although he did not intend to keep his business in that building, he saw no reason to tear it down. "That building is structurally sound. There are many ways it could be used," he said. Mayor Barkley Clark said the lot was needed for parking spaces because of its proximity to the new city hall and the riverfront beautification project. He said the additional parking was necessary because the projects were expected to draw many people downtown. "I ideally it would be nice if we did not have to take down any building at all for anything." Clark said. Mall developers will be skeptical of the city's commitment to build a downtown mall if the commission is reluctant to raise a single building for development. Clark said. But, he said, if Lawrence were to continue to grow, it would be necessary for some buildings to be razed. The city also approved a rate increase of 97 cents for Sunflower Cablevision. It was Sunflower's first increase since 1976. Under the increase, which is to take effect Jan. 1, 1980, Sunflower's rates will be $**$ with tax included. The current rate is $6.75 plus tax. a special someone to organize our resource files in the Senate Office. Student Senate is looking for... pick up an application in 105B of the Kansas Union.
