6 Tuesday, November 13, 1979 University Daily Kansan Flat 'Boyfriend' lacks bubbly fun "The Boyfriend," a musical by Sandy Wilson, Presented by the KU Theatre and School of Fine Arts at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 and 15 through 17 and at 2:38 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Main Stage. Directed and choreographed by Marcia Grund, assistant professor of theatre. Musical direction by George Lawner, professor of ensembles. Setting and lighting by Gregory Hill, instructor of theatre. Presented by Jennifer Glemmon, Shawnee graduate students. By RHONDA HOLMAN Entertainment Editor From the moment the curtain goes up on Gregory H's coloring book-like set, it is a kind of revelation. The way he believed—only to indulge in a bubbly bottle of pink champagne. But KU's production goes flat by taking itself much more seriously and infers servile characters with a straight face. Director Marcia Grund has a fine cast of singers, dancers and actors on the screen. But too many laughs are lost because the movie is sure what is, and I can't support it to be fun. SANDY WILSON'S "Boyfriend" is making fun of the silly boy-meets-girl formula musicals of the 1920s. It concerns seven romances that develop-with commitment, and it features Carina Ball in 1962 at Madame Dubenet's Finishing School for Young Ladies on the French Rivera. By midnight all of the well-founded English girls have found their fiances, as has Madame Dubenet, their headmistress, who successfully renewed war-time romance. Although the British accents used in KU's production tend to be inconsistent and awkward, the French accents, particularly those by Catherine Paddock, Merriam sophomore, and Dubonet and Connie Ventress, Olathe senior, as Hortense, actually enhance the humor of those roles. As usual, Paddock, as the passion-skinned headmistress, can get a laugh merely by the sight of the stage. To understand the show's tongue-in-cheek nature in a musically and dramatically fine setting. ANNE YLAMER, Salisbury, Mo., Junior, has a light,飞撩 soprano voice that blends beautifully with the strong tenor voice of Gregory Todd Hunt, St. Charles III., junior, on their sentimental low duets. But their melodiousness and mass of the romance between Poly and Tony. Karyl Lynn Burns, Overland Park junior, is an energetic, flirtatious Maise, and Charleston with Bobby, played by Gregory Brown, who is a graduate student. is especially delightful. All of Hill's bright sets look adorable but the silver ballerina against a starry sky in the third act is great. Glenn's colorful, often shimmering costumes and some lively dresses are part of the act. help make the Carnival Bail the most fun of the evening. The bold, sultry "Carnival Tango," choreographed by Deborah Stimute, LawrenceSenior, and danced by Jerrik Gullertez, Topela freshman, particularly fits on the opening night. LIVERLE TEMPOS and aolder performance by George Lawner's small orchestra would have made more of Wilson's bouncy score. KU's production of "The Boyfriend" is durable, but it lacks the elements of parody that it was intended to have and confuses its audience to strive to be real, rather than ridiculous.
