Spikers host tourney

Volleyball teams from throughout the Midwest will travel to Lawrence this weekend for the annual Jayhawk Invitational Tournament in Indiana (Gymnastics)
The tournament will feature a number of private volleyball clubs from Kansas City and Wichita.
"Playing those private clubs will be good for us," Kansas Coach Bob Lockwood said. "They have a lot of strong players and are very experienced."
Kansas State and Nebraska Wesleyan will also play in the tournament.
"Kansas State is always a good volleyball
team and Nebraska Wesleyan is one of few teams to best Creighton, which is a real tough team, "Lockwood said.
KU, however, beat Creighton Wednesday
15-13, 15-10, 15-10.
"They have been playing so well all year, it is hard; for me to imagine them losing," he said.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and continues through the day. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The tournament will have two divisions, one consisting of eight 'A' teams, the other six. The final will be a KU team as was strong as any队 in the tournament. He said he expected the B队 to win.
Women hope to swim up storm in Cyclone Relays

However, freshman Tammy Thomas, who competed on the relay teams last week, won't be swimming at the meet.

Thomas, who has already broken the school records in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly this year, will be out of action with a leg injury.
Kemp said his team's strengths were the medley and freestyle relay events.
"We do have a lot of depth," he said. "I think we will be able to cover ourselves okay."
But Kempf said he wasn't worried about his team's chances this weekend.

"At the end of the year, I never really reached my potential," she said. "I always think to myself, 'What would I have done if I wouldn't have taken sick?'
Although Kempt did Schaffer was one of the best backstrokers in the country, he said there were fewer outstanding swimmers in the backstroke than there are in other strokes.
Lanny Schaffer learned she had qualified for the Olympic trials only three weeks ago. She qualified with a time of 2:05:44, recorded in the 202-ward backstroke last AUI.
Although Schaffer said she really didn't have anywhere else to go when she chose KU, she was also recruited by Florida State and some Midwest schools.

"They really weren't recruiting me because nobody knew I was leaving at semester," she said. "I'd known the students and almost went there, but I didn't glad it didn't."

Less than two years ago, Lanny Schaffer began a successful A&M swimming, but wasn't recruited heavily because she graduated a semester early from Topper High School, where he grew up.
No team scores will be kept, Kvistsoi said. The exhibition match between KU and Wichita State scheduled for Nov. 17 has been canceled.
Men netters finish season with dual against Missouri
