University Daily Kansan Friday, November 9,1979 11 KU faces final top 20 foe By TONY FITTS Snorts Editor Tomorrow in Norman, Okla., the Kansas Jayhawks will play the last of the team's spring games on Wednesday, the toughest in the country: the Oklahoma Sooners, ranked No. 6 by the Associated Press. Kansas so far has played Pittsburgh, Michigan and Nebraska while the three teams were ranked in the Top 20. Some of them are still there with the best teams in the country at the end of the season, but they have fallen to be lucky to finish with a winning record. But Oklahoma should have no such double. They have lost all to Texas and Alabama in the playoff opponents. They have beaten Colorado, Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma. KU, on the other hand, is 34, with a 12-conference record. The Jayhawks beat Iowa State three weeks ago for their first road victory since 1967. They have scored 112 points and won five games. "Hawks are last in the conference in total offense, while the Sooners are second. On -KANSAN- Sports paper, the matchup looks almost as bad as the Kansas-Nebraska game. BUT THE TWO teams were even further apart last year, and Oklahoma barely squeaked by 17-16. KU had three chances to win, but Oklahoma made a point-triple but, could not pull off the upset. KU Coach Don Fambrrough said last year's close game with Oklahoma could help the 'Hawks tomorrow.' Kansas did upset Oklahoma in 1975, though, embarrassing the top-tiered Sooners 23.2 in Normal. KU went on that year to lose to Pitt in the Sun Bowl, and Oklahoma won the mythical national championship by beating Michigan in the Orange Bowl. “Coming within two points last year gave them a lot of confidence.” “It’s great that they also know they’re going to have to play hard—they’re going to have to play an even tougher game.” "IT'S THE SAME old story, just like it was Michigan and Nebraska. We're Men tankers open season Men's swimming Coach Bill Spahn said he was thrilled to report the petition when the Jawabhs compete with the University of Missouri and Drury College swimming teams in the first dual meet of the season. we don't get on to a good start in our medley events." Spain said. "Missouri has been a very successful team in the season. They've had a good recruiting year and they have good swimmasters are returning." With Sirm of the back field will be David Irwin, halfback, Stanley Wilson, fullback, fullback Watts started his first college game last year against Kansas and passed for one of the best in the game. It may be hard to force the Sooners into any mistakes. They have some of the best pitching records in the year's Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims. She has been hurt for a few garnishes this year, but he still leads the nation in scoring and is expected to be at expectation to fall full timeout. going to have to force them into mistakes and take advantage of those mistakes." "Dryir is one team we don't want to take lightly. They were third in the NAIA last season, and they're looking this year to win the NAIA Nationals." THIS YEAR, he will be throwing, to Forrest Valora, tight end, and Freddie Nixon, split end, when he isn't handing off to Sims or Overtreest. The last time KU swam against Missouri, the 'Hawks won 75-38. They have a 2-4 meet record against Drury. The Sooners also have stars on the defensive side of the line, including George Cumby, All-Big Eight linebacker, and Darral Ray, All-Big Eight safety. The Sooners are second in total defense in the league to Nebraska and 18th in the country. "We could be in a lot of trouble tonight if Kansas is in pretty good shape for the game, but they won't win. wide receiver, Jumiz Zind, linebacker, who will not make the trip to Norman, according to Funtburn. He said that just a few weeks ago the Kansas beat "I was glad we were able to get outside today," Fambrough said yesterday. "We needed to practice the kicking game quite a bit, and you just can't do that inside." The Jayhawks practiced inside Allen Field House Wednesday because of the rain. "I hope we play well against them," baughroff said. "I don't have all the ones on this team, and Saina is not the only problem we have. That is the reason they're six in the country."
