8 Friday, November 9.1979 University Daily Kansan Med Center teaches humanities By STEVEN KOPPES Staff Reporter They teach more than endocrinology, neurophysiology and toxicology at the College of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Kan. They also teach such classes as medicine and literature, death and dying, and the history of medicine. Undergraduates, teachers and social workers take the classes, as well as nurses, medical students and physicians. Fred Whitehead, teaching associate in community health, teaches medicine and literature, a new class at the college this semester. Whitehead said the course was based on the mimetic theory of literature. The word "mimetic" is derived from the Greek *mimetiko*, which means "imitator." The mimetic holds that literature mutates or reflects its reality, really happening in the world. THE CLASS TRIED to apply the metictime theory to Herman Melville's "Bartley the Serviener." The medical students and the doctors, for example, tried to diagnose Melville by diagnosing the symptoms of a Wall Street clerk of the 1840s who didn't want to work. They tried to decide whether he was depressed or schizophrenic, but Whitehead said they weren't very successful. "It had partly to do with the uncertainty of psychological disease, and partly because what was happening in the story was too ambiguous," he said. The class looks at contemporary issues as well as literary structure, Whitehead said. The class has recently studied Anton Chekhov's "Ward Six," which was about an impaired physician—one who either is ill, inages, is an alcoholic or is depressed. Another focus of the course is on the "medicine-humanism interface." "There has always been a stigma attached to impaired doctors. Now there are programs for them to obtain help. "Medicine tends to emphasize the scientific and put less emphasis on neoile." Robert Hudson, chairman of history of medicine, said that "We are very much oriented to that same goal." HUDSON'S DEATH and dying class spends less time talking about the mechanics of death and more time talking about how people feel about it, he said. Whitehead defined humanism as the concern for what a human being is and what his potentials are. The humanist is one of the many facets of the history of medicine department. He also teaches a history of medicine class specifically for medical students and their spouses. --close contact with organizations, such as the Federation of the Blind. Audio-Reader brings news to the disabled However, the University of Kansas Audio-Reader offers some consolation in the form of voices that reach across the airwaves. By LINDA MANGELSDORF With the turn of a switch, the reading service brings the daily news, books, magazines and special programs into the home. With more than 400 blind, handicapped and elderly people. Broadcast through a subcarrier signal from KANU-FM radio station on special receivers, the Audio-Reader keeps track of elderly persons apartess of daily events. Started in October 1971, the Audio-Reader serves more than 5,000 persons who are unable to read printed material. In addition to serving a 65-mile radius around Lawrence, Audio-Reader serves a 30-mile radius around Concordia, Manhattan, Junction City, Salina, Russell, Pratt, Great Bend, Learned, Hays, Ellis, Chanute and Purdue. In the spring, the Garden Series serve a 75-mile radius around Garden City through microwave or cable waves. Any legally blind or handicapped person who can use a printed material may apply to receive use of the Auto-Reader, and those who could benefit from the Audio-Reader program are subscribed, said Robert Reed, a special education teacher. The focus of Audio-Reader is on greater independence for the handicapped person, Harwitz said. She said the program kept in Staff Reporter "I'm very fortunate. I have the opportunity to work here and get the latest news from Audio-Reader and our AP wire service." "It keeps them involved—and if they aren't involved they become less active. With the Audio-Reader they can remain active and aware." "The more active you are, the less you use Audio-Reader," he said. "Our average listener is 65 years old. Marsaili said Audio-Reader was beneficial to elderly or disabled persons "because it keeps them informed on events in their community. JUNIORS-SENIORS "Staying abreast of activities as simple as voting or family and social activities is important," he added. "Audio-Reader makes it easy for the handicapped to communicate with friends on events of the day. It extracts you if you don't know what's happening in the world." Programming for the Audio-Reader is done by a 30-member advisory committee of listeners. The advisory committee selects experts and helps with any problems, Hurwitz said. Although he has monitored Audio-Reader since 1971, Marshall spends only one or two hours a week outside his job listening. Interviews, exercise, cooking, legislature and sports for the handicapped are some of the programs overseen by Gary Marshall, special program coordinator. Marshall, who is blind, interviews people involved in beep basketball, wheelchair basketball, track, bowling and swimming activities for the handicapped.
