Carlin to hear University appeal against cuts in budget requests

University of Kansas administrators are preparing to appeal proposed cuts in the University's budget requests at Gov. Carin's garden meetings Tuesday.

Percussion students and faculty members from high schools and colleges throughout the Midwest will attend the "Day of Percussion," tomorrow in Murphy Hall. The event is sponsored by the Kansas Chapter of Creative Arts Society and the KU Band.
"This session will be different from others because the clinicians will have ensembles playing with them while they go over the basics," Jay Wanamaker, New Hartford, N.Y., graduate student and president of the Creative Arts Society, said Wednesday.
A special guest for the day will be Jim intercourse chart, Michael McGee Music, State University of New York at Potsdam. He will perform with the KU Jazz Ensemble in a drama-set clinic.
Peterson has performed with many artists, including Barry Manlow, Liza Minnell, Englebert Humperdink and Tony Bennett.

At 10 a.m., Linda Maxey, Lawrence percussionist and a former member of the KU music faculty, will lead a marimba clinic. Maxey holds music degrees from
North Texas State University and the Eastman School of Music, Rockefeller. N.E.
Maxy's workshop will be followed by a Latin percussion clinic at 11 a.m., led by J.C. Combs, of percussion at Wichita State University.
Combs has been a clinician for the Ludwig Drum Co., and has played with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and the Kansas City Lyric Orgue Orchestra.
A CLINIC on timpan, which will include a CLINIC on the KU Wind Ensemble, be conducted at 1 p.m. by George Boberg, KU professor of music performance in percussion. Before coming to KU, students will be recording a studio recording艺术 in New York City.
Mini-clinics will be held at 2 p.m. JFK vibraphone students will meet with Howard Pitler, band director at Wichita Heights High School. A session on percussion maintenance will be conducted by Brian Calderon KU graduate attending the Cleveland Conservatory of music.
Mimarina composer and performer Gordon Stout also will conduct an afternoon clinic and perform with the Wichita Marimba Band.
The Wichita State University Marimba Ensemble, led by Combs, will perform in concert at t.p.m.
Admission to the eight-hour clinic will be $1.50 for PAS members and $3 for non-members.
The Bob Marley and the Wailers concert, which was tentatively scheduled for Dec. 6 at Hoe Auditorium, is in danger of being vandalized, to a Student Union Activities official.

"I can't say what to expect from Carlin," he said. "This is really still his first year in office."
Kathleen Nitchner, University director of the University's Center for Computer Science, received Bibl's official letter informing the University of his proposed cuts. However, he said, Bibl's office has told the University that he would not be involved.
It is too early to say whether Carlin will favor increased budgets for Kansas universities, Shankel said.
"THE DECISION LIES COMPETITively with the governor," he said. "We aren't in any position to compromise. It isn't a matter of demanding something and bargaining."
"THE REGENTS THEN told us what we authorized to request from the state," she said. "We have the governor's budget office, explaining and justifying our proposed funding with our donors."
Shanket said KU's budget process began June 1, when the University submitted its budget proposals to the Kansas Board of Regents.
