New computer faster for users

KU's new computer system is eating up and spitting out red tape twice as fast as any system before it, the director of computing services said yesterday.

250 terminals across campus, said
Jerry Niebium, the director. The
NAS system replaced an International Business Machine Corp. 3031 AP processor that is now being used for research and instruction. The IBM computer had been in use since January.
The NAS computer, which cost $730,170, handles mostly administrative data processing.
"All major administrative systems are using the new computer," Niebaum said. "Library circulation, enrollment, student records, payroll, most of the offices are users."
The most attractive feature of the system, located at the computer center, is its increased capacity. Niebium said that in the past there had been "brownouts" during peak-load periods, such as enrollment. During these times the computer cannot respond as quickly to user commands.
"We had reached saturation with the old system. It couldn't really handle the load." he said.
System users say they are satisfied with the newer, faster computer.
"The people using the system in my office tell me that they are very happy with the increased response time. Unlike the past they don't have to wait for a return product from the computer," said Ward Zimmerman, director of the budget office.
