Campus/Area University Daily Kansan 9 Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1985 Judge is hospitalized after fall from bridge By a Kansan reporter A Wyandotte County judge was listed in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital last night after he fell from a turnip bridge sometime after midnight Friday, a hospital spokesman said yesterday. Lawrence G. Zubel, 50, Kansas City, Kan., an associate district judge, was found at 10:45 yesterday morning under the bridge by construction workers, said Capt. Martyn Steele, of the Douglas Jr.'s office. He had been under the bridge since Saturday. He was conscious but unable to walk when found less than a mile from the east Lawrence turnpike interchange. Steele said. Zukel was at a fishing party with friends and relatives at Lakeview. Terry Showalter, Zukel's nephew, said fog in the area made visibility poor. a private lake in north central Douglas County, when he left the party's cabin to take a walk. "I don't think he was aware that he was on a bridge,"he said. The Douglas County Sheriff's office searched the lake area with bloodhounds, Showalter said, but they did not search far enough. Kansas Fish and Game Department agents also were called to help in the search and used electronic scanning equipment as they searched the 75-acre lake. Showalter said Zukel, who fell 20 to 23 feet, stepped over the rail of the bridge and landed on his feet on the ground below.
