Portrait arrives
The gift donated to the University of Kansas by the class of 73 has finally arrived.
The Chair is a portrait of E. Laurence Alchimers, Jr. former chancellor of KU.
The portrait arrived about two weeks ago and is now being framed by the Museum of Art, Steve Clark, assistant director of the Alumni Association, said Tuesday.
The protrait may hang in the Chancellor's suite for a while, Clark said, but it would be moved later to the University Archives in Spencer Library.
A copy of the portrait will be in Strong
in a collection of copies of the portraits of other
chancellors.
Clark said that delivery of the portrait had been delayed because it was painted in China.
"Chalmers was given the option of selecting an artist for the portrait, or letting the endowment association furnish him a local artist," he said.
He said that because Chalmers was president of the Art Institute in Chicago, he probably had been very busy, which may have caused the delay.
A portrait of Raymond Nichols, Chalmers's successor, was completed before Chalmers's portrait because Nichols' portrait was painted in Kansas City, Clark said.
Frank Ayeldele, director of public relations for the endowment association, said the endowment association had always paid for the portraits.

He also said that all the portraits were alike, except for one—the portrait of Francis Huntington Snow, chancellor from 1890 to 1901, which is a full length portrait.
Aydelote said Nichols' portrait was donated by his fraternity, Sirmium Chi. Mr.
Chalmers was chancellor of the University from 1969 to 1972.
