AAUP plans to meet with state legislators
An informal discussion of faculty financial concerns with members of the Kansas Legislature is being planned by the Executive Committee of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) at the University of Kansas.
Frances Ingemann, president of the KU chapter, said yesterday that the committee was planning to meet with the legislators to express their views.
Ingemann said the committee and the legislators might discuss faculty members' health insurance plans at the meeting, which will probably be the first week in December. The current insurance plan is based on filing the academic year, she said, and faculty members must pay for their own health insurance over the summer.
"It's entirely possible that we must use or
the matter of sabbatical leaves," ingenuity
The number of faculty members who may take sabbatical leaves at the same time is restricted to four per cent, she said, but those who are more than that are qualified for sabbaticals.
Both Ingemann and Charles Krider, another member of the AAUP Executive Committee, said salary increases might be discussed at the meeting.
"That's a perennial interest, but it's
particularly unfortunate this year; Ingemann said.
The Board of Regents already have developed a plan to increase faculty salaries this year, she said, but inflation already is nullifying that plan's effect.
Krider said he also thought thatropians 80, a bill involving collective bargaining, which will be submitted to the legislature in its next session, would be discussed.

'Satellite' concept lures students into innovative history course
Satellites have turned a University of Kansas medieval history course into a high飞速
More than 100 students have enrolled in history 422, World of the Middle Ages, Lymn Nelson, chairman of the department of history at North Carolina State University would have been considered a success.
According to Nelson, the enticing feature of the course is what he calls the satellite system of courses, on such topics as heresy and witchcraft, the barbarian invasion, the rise of the Christian faith and mysticism, are being conjunction with a two-hour survey course.
The survey portion of the program provides a general introduction to the Middle Ages and prepares the student for his special interest. Nelson said.
"With this system I've been able to do a lot of work on an interesting topic, heresy and witchcraft," Janet Selves, Overland Park sophomore, said. "In other survey courses you can never find the time to pursue your special interests."
The real advantage of the system, Nelson said, is that it allows a teacher to discuss his undergraduate students. Few university and certainly not KU, can afford to offer
three-hour undergraduate courses on any of these topics, he said.
"My staillite course in medieval agriculture requires very little extra time from me." Nelson said. "This is my field and I'm doing this work anyway."
Steve Larsen, Lawrence senior, said he had the same instructor as a satellite scientist.
According to Nelson, faculty members have found the satellite courses a relief and an opportunity.
"The satellite in Christian faith is less formal, and I think the instructor really enjoys it," Larsen said. "I don't think he has been able to teach this topic before."
Next semester the same system will be used for courses in modern European and East Asian history. Nelson said that this course would pursue his interest in the Spanish Civil War.
It will also permit introductory students to discuss contemporary Irish history with Hugh Duff, visiting professor from the University of Dublin, and post-World War II German economics with Karl Bosl, visiting professor from the University of Munich.
"None of these would be economically feasible under the regular course system," NUH said.

The Ruwanejws came to the United States years ago as participants in the Host Fashion event.
Sharing their culture with Americans is an important part of the program, according to the program.

Foreign students in the program are assigned to host families. Although they don't actually live with the families, they participate in social activities with them and receive help from them in adjusting to the culture.
