6 Tuesday, November 26, 1974 University Daily Kansan Donnie Von Moore Cagers ready for season opener Associate Sports Editor But will he still be in the starting line-up for the opening game against Northeast Missouri State after Tommie Smith played in the intrusda game last Wednesday? "Yes, I think I will," Von Moore said. "I'm not really competing with Tommie for the position. He plays the other forward position." For all those University of Kansas fans who suffered through the final, painful weeks of the football season, relief is in hands. The season is this weekend with two home games. By JIMSHELDON THE MAIN REASONS Von Moore is a starter this year, he said yesterday, are that he is concentrating more on his playing and trying to be the best they say and doing what they tell him to do. Owens was referring to Indiana, Owens and Kentucky, teams KU plays later this season. KU's biggest enemy could be over- "I think in December two things are important," KU head coach Ted Owens said yesterday. "You want to get as much experience as possible. That's number one. Secondly, you want to play against competition to find out what kind of players you have. We have the teams that we can play a lot of people over the course and play three of the top 16 teams in the nation." FOR BOTH NORTHEAST MISSOURI AND AUGUSTANA, the prospect of playing the No. 6 team in the nation has to be a little frightening, but both may benefit from the experience. As Owens said, both squads will receive a share of gate receipts that will be used for training and they are used to. Also, their recruiting might be helped because they play KU. Sports Reporter IF YOU HAVEN't HEARD of Northeast Missouri State or Augustana, don't worry. Neither have a lot of other people. While neither is the most impressive team on KU's schedule, the two games should give the 'Hawks a chance to do some experimenting and take a look at some of their younger players. Another reason he is a starter is that he can jump like a kangaroo. Von Moore's rebounding is outstanding, and KU will need rebounding to compete nationally this year. Von Moore rebounds into line-up Six veterans are returning from last year's outfit, which won the Big Eight championship and the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Midwest Regional. That means many people are again expecting big things from the Jayhawks, who are ranked sixth in the nation in the Associated Press' preseason poll. But this year it will be a different story. The University of Kansas was tabled as the No. 6 team in the nation by the presseason Associated Press poll. But rankings and expectations will be something that the 'Hawks will have to live up to. The team will play State on Saturday and Augusta (S.D.) College Monday, both games will start at 7 p.m. "EVERYBODY ON THE team can score," Van Moore said, "including the score of a penalty kick. The ground-bounding is what I can do best and the area where I can add the most to the team." What many fans remember about Danny von Moore are the mistakes he made last year. By JOHN WELTMER Craig Oliphant scored a try for KU, and McGillivray also added a penalty. McGillivray also added a penalty kite. The KU Rugby Club's hope of winning a league title ended Saturday when the Kansas City Blues defeated KU 27-9 in Swoke Park in Kansas City. Mo At an awards banquet Saturday night, McGillvray won the team's most valuable player award. Oliphant was voted the team's rookie of the year. KU ended the season 8-2 in the league and overall. "The guards might all foul out and someone else would have to play guard. I think it is important to learn to play all the positions." VON MORE HAD trouble playing KU's pressure defense last year, and that kept him still at the bottom. This year Von Moore has mastered the that. That is another reason he is startling. "Last year I was discouraged by not playing very much," Von Moore said, "but I thought it out and talked to my parents about the situation and decided to be a man who isn't playing thinks about quitting, but last year I really didn't give it a chance." VON MOORE HAS gained about 15 pointers and will help him, especially in rebounding. Von Moore said he was selecting his shots better and getting better rebounding positions. "I concentrate more on both offensive and defensive rebounding this year and aren't too worried about it," he said. "We don't pay any attention to the polls." According to Owens, the 'hawks haven't shown any signs of overconfidence. In fact, Owens said, the team has improved since his day's introsalud Crismon and Blue game. "I believe our players are stable enough to know that they shouldn't take anyone too far." "I think that we can go undefeated this year if we just play and don't look ahead. I don't think we will look ahead. We can play with any team in the country if we just go out and play. We can't think about who we are playing and let this beat us." ... Shake your old Spear Head "I felt we had a very good practice today." Owens said. "We had good concentration and spirit. This year it will heavily rely on three junior college transcripts from the University of Charles Rose, to improve on that record. One person at KU who does know something about Northeast Missouri is center Rick Suttle. Suttle played with Northeast's sixman boy, Bob Young, in high school in East St. Louis, Ill., and played against substitute Jim Blaydes and starter "I talked to them this summer," Suttle said. "I know how they play, but I don't think they know how I play. There's a big difference in the way things were taught here. They'll be a little bit more surprised about me than I will be about them." He will need assistance given to a basketball player, Augustana, however, returns all its starters from last year's team and has added a promising freshman in forward Greg Gibson indicated that his plans were uncertain. Owens also said sophomore forward Reuben Shelton had been officially red-shirted. Owens had contemplated the move for some time. Shelton must sit out the rest of the season, but is still allowed to practice with the team. Gibson quits at K-State From the Associated Press "By leaving Kansas State I feel that Kansas State can unite again," he said. "I think we can have a winning season this next year. By my leaving I can we have everybody united and everybody back in our program, and we'll have a chance to do well." "I think that these kids deserve to go to a bowl game.
