Kivisto is the only player missing from last season's championship cast. Coach Ted Owens, who guided Kansas to the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship semifinals last season, said, "Logically, we should be favored. We have a problem with the loss of Tom Kivisto. He is leading our chemistry which brought it all together." Oklahoma Coach Joe Ramsay admitted that Kansas "has to be an overwhelming favorite." But a team with Alvan Adams "has a good shot at the title," he said. "The Sooners have Adams, and Ramsey thinks he can score the scoring leader 'will be better than ever.'" Trickey, the former Oral Roberts coach, said, "Our team will play well. We'll try to run and shoot the ball and play a pressure-type defense. The game was invented to play the ball. Trickey has a good nucleus of plays, so we have Craig Delass, Larry Loots and Hercule V. The U.S. defeated three other schools at a meet Friday night at Robinson Natorium. Marian Washington, women's basketball coach, cited tough competition, offensive problems and a rash of turnovers as the main reasons for her team's losses. The basketball team lost 75-40 at Claremore College on Friday. Forward Pemy Paulsen and pivot Nancy Hanna paused and placed 15 points respectively to the game effort. At the Region Six Voleball联赛 Tournament, KU placed fifth out of 15 teams. But their 7-2 match record and their impressive play against the eventual tournament winner, Southwest Missouri State University, was enough to rank sixth in the national tournament next month. Assistant volleyball coach Judy Raney said one team, that didn't finish in the top two in Region Six play was voted as an "at-large" representative. The University of Minnesota finished second and the Kansas State University Wildcitters, second to KU in the state meet, finished eighth. According to Raney, KU should find out whether it is going to Portland, Ore., on Dec. 12 for the national tournament some time after Dec. 2.
