University Daily Kansan Thursday, November 21. 1974 2 Sweet tooth stronger than pocketbook pains Although the prices of candy, soft drinks and pastries have risen substantially during recent months, the added costs haven't been the buying habits of many local residents. The price increase, which may be traced directly to the higher prices producers have been forced to pay for sugar, is expected to continue into next year. No one seems to know exactly how sugar prices will level off. The situation is of particular interest to those in the bakery industry. "We had a price increase on some products during the summer and were fared to win them again just two weeks before the winter," the owner of Joe's Bakeery, 616 W. 9th St., said. "We generally don't raise prices during the school year," Smith said, "but we had to do something to offset the price we must pay for sugar. Last week we paid $3 for each cup of sugar and he has risen to $6 this week. The cost of sugar has almost tripled during the last year." "I can't really explain it, but we've had a greater volume of business this fall," Smith said. Customers evidently are putting the sweet tooth ahead of the pocketbook, because their needs aren't met. There are a few options bakeries may take to prevent substantial price increases. About 15 persons have applied for the position of dean of women, William Balfour, vice chancellor for student affairs, said yesterday. Applications in for dean's job Applications to replace Emily Taylor, dean of women, were accepted until yesterday, he said. The University had advertised nationwide to fill the position. Taylor has resigned, effective Dec. 31, to become director of the Office of Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. Members of a search committee formed to evaluate the applicants will be named the general job descriptions, the committees will be given no special charges, Balfour said. in place of beet and can sugar in an effort to keep prices down. "But something you must watch when using substitutes is that you don't lower the quality of the finished product," Smith said. Charel Womers, owner of Jennings of Bermuda, owners of Table 78, Abbey St., said she had also had to raise some prices. “Our prices for single doughnuts and rolls have remained the same,” Jennings said, but they’re now more expensive. We hate to call the whole increase on to the public, so we’re taking some of the loss ourselves. Today’s price of sugar is $1.99, as was when we first started this business.” "We've received notice that Hershey chocolate products will be increasing to 20 cents also," Forrest Jolly, vending manager for KU concessions, said. The "Hershey" hit doubled because the costs of chocolate as well as sugar are rapidly increasing. Prices of many products in vending machines also have had a dramatic increase. Because the KU concession service is attempting to keep the price of candy bars at 15 cents, they no longer carry Mar's. The store sells the candy caps. But the situation may soon change. "We bought quite a bit of candy as the prices started up, and thus have a 60 to 75 day supply which will get us into next semester. We can continue to sell candy bars for 15 cents until sometime in February. "Camed soft drinks are selling for 25 cents in our machines and we hope to hold at this level, although they're selling for 20 cents on the counter at retail store stores."
