6 Tuesday, November 19, 1974 University Daily Kansan Women cagers to open tonight The members are young and mostly new to intercollegiate competition, but the KU women's basketball team that opens its hoops at the Coliseum in Allen Field House looks promising. "I'm just amazed with the talent I have," coach Jordyn Montgomery, the team's head coach, said yesterday. That talent consists of 20 women, mostly freshmen and sophomores, who compose the A and B teams. Five of them tower over 5 foot 10. The tallest, in fact, is 6 foot 2. "Last year our oldest player was Debbie Lederl milk at about 5 foot 8," Washington said. Senior Penny Paulsen, a star pitcher on the softball team and the second returner, Laudermilk, one of the two returning starters from last year's team, which recorded an 11-8 record, is a junior who will play the nivot position. Washington said several players, including Laudermerl, were still with the volleyball and field hockey teams and wouldn't be out for basketball until the completion of their sport. Consequently, he hasn't announced her final varsity team. Jean Reed, Washington's assistant, will coach the B team in the game tonight. The first varsity outlaw will be Friday at Claremont, Okla., against Claremore. The team's schedule is long—12 games at home and 16 on the road. If the team qualifies for the Region 6 basketball tour, they will play in a tournament that could include as many as 30 games. To make that regional tournament on March 6, KU must finish in the top two in its conference, which includes Kansas State, Wichita State and Emporia State. Chiefs explode for Denver bust From the Associated Press DENVER-Kansas City exploded for a 19-point third quarter to outlast the Denver Broncs 42-34 in the Monday night National Football League game. Highlighted by Len Dawson's scrambling 35-yard touchdown pass to Otis Taylor, the nationally televised game produced the combined score in the NFL this season. The loss, despite the passing heroes of Denver quarterback Charley Johnson, who threw for 445 yards, all but mathematically eliminated the Broncos from playoff contests and the Oakland Rattles to clinch the title in the American Conference West Division. Emmett Edwards Student to join field hockey meet A member of the KU women's field hockey team will be competing in the National Field Hockey Tournament, Nov. 28-31 in De Kalb, III. The member, Ann Hartstein, St. Louis senior, was selected for the second team at the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament last Sunday in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Hartstein was one of 22 players chosen from 132 at the tournament to vie for a position on the United States Field Hockey Team over the Thanksgiving vacation. Harstein said yesterday it was "pretty doubtful" she would make the U.S.队, but she said she was excited about seeing some really good players. Most of the best hockey players are from the east coast, where field hockey has been played for a long time, Harstein said. She knew that the hockey was just getting started in the Midwest. Harstein, a right fullback, played field hockey for four years in high school before playing four years here. Harstein said he played well with both a team sport and an individual sport. "You can really have team spirit and yet still compete as an individual," she said. Six other members of the KU team participated in the Midwest tournament. It has been a long and disappointing season for wide receiver Emmett Emmett Sports Reporter Senior year frustrates Edwards By ALLEN QUAKENBUSH In addition to having the team goals shattered by five straight losses, Edwards also isn't having the season he thought he would have. After catching 75 passes in his first two years, including 49 last season, he has grabbed only 26 this year. Last Saturday's game against Oklahoma was an unusual one for Edwards. He caught "I'd have to say that both the team goals and my personal goals have gone down," he said. "I think we lose a lot or dominate the conference in receiving stats, or at least catch a lot of passes. I didn't really think that I'd catch 49 again, but I never thought I would have only 36." There is a reason Edwards hasn't caught as many passes this year. He simply isn't being thrown to as much. The Jahywah abandoned their pass-oriented offense in spring drills and switched to the veer-T, primarily primary emphasis on the running game. "From the very first, it seemed like they were going with the run all the way," he said. "I've always thought we should have a completely balanced attack, and I think we could have done better if we would have had one." "Before the season, I actually thought we were going to throw between 21 and 23 times a game. That would have been enough but it was not. But instead they really cat down on it." In five games, from the Kansas State For Complete Motorcycle Insurance GENE DOANE AGENCY 843-3012 824 Mass. St. game through the Colorado game, Edwards, an all-Big Eight selection last year, caught only five passes. That, combined with four of those games, made it tough for him. "It's bad enough when you're losing," he said, "but when you come out of the game you get that." He had my redshirt and I felt that I had really matured as a receiver. Then, it frustrates when you don't get the ball and you have a chance to show what you can do. “It’s easy to get down, but you have to keep the urge to be the best. You’ve got to show that you can do it any time. That’s what keeps me motivated.” Because he hasn't caught as many passes this season, Edwards hasn't received as much publicity as he got last year. But the school will this win his chances for post-season honors or of being drafted high by the pros. "The pros are just looking for talent," he said. "They've watched me for three years and they know what I can do. I think they are one of the top receivers in the country." Despite the frustrations and disappointments Edwards has encountered this season, he still manages to remain philosophical about it. "It's been disappointing," he said, "but there nothing you can do about it. Life is sort of up and down, and you just have to roll with the punches."
