He had recently returned from Zaire, Africa, where he regained his heavyweight crown by knocking out Foreman. KANSAS CITY Mo-Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali brought his act to the Midwest over the weekend and was unhappy with its drawing power. "This is a shame," Ali told the small crowd that rattled around in the arena. "I'm not a month away from winning the world heavyweight championship before a crowdfunding of a hundred million people around the globe. And we couldn't fill this little champion cup up. You're blessed to have a champion like me in this one-horse town." The turnout obviously disturbed the champion, who regained his title Oct. 30 in Zaire when he knocked out George Foreman. Ali fought four two-round exhibitions in the new Kerner arena Saturday night but Only Jones landed more than a couple of punches as Ali tipioped around the ring. The champion pretended he was hurt as he stumbled to the canvas, did an occasional tap dance, joke with the crowd and assumed the role of a vaudeville funny man. Muhammad danced through the four-scailed fights, first with Ron Draper of Kansas City, then the Roy Williams of Philadelphia, then the Pennsylvania kings, *Tracy* from Kansas City, and Eddie "Boss Man" Jones of Los Angeles. There was no scoring. Al allt didn't try to hit anybody except Jones for a few brief seconds. It was entertainment, and Ali was at his best. Muhammed Ali basks in spotlight By MARK ZELIGMAN Exhibition crowd disappoints champion From the Associated Press Sports Editor So when Maddox, a photographer and I arrived about 4 p.m., I wasn't sure what would happen. All showed up, only a few shots with a party of seven or eight body guards. KANAS CITY, Mo.—I really didn't know what to expect when I walked into a television studio in Kansas City, Mo., last Friday to interview Muhammad Ali. HALF THE STATION'S employees took a break to watch All answer questions from viewers on the news. He was his typical grouseless self, putting on a show for all to see. Michelle Maddox, who works at the studio, had told me she could get an interview with Ali, who was in Kansas City last weekend to fight in a charity exhibition match. Ali was supposed to appear on the 4:30 p.m. news. As soon as the news ended, we had our chance. We pulled Ali to the side of the studio and began talking, surrounded by All's bodyguards. "It's hard to be humble," Ali said, "when you're as bad as I am." "I'm here because I'm going to whip four men tomorrow night at Arrowhead Shooter." All then spoke of his training routine, which consists of running and a special diet. Maddox interrupted him at that point to remind him that the fight was at Kemper Arena, not Arrowhead. Such trivial matters had a lot of appeal, and he think he had heard of either place anyway. "After six weeks of that," he said, "I'm the badest man in the who-oole world." He had been at a lot of fun. "My first wife," he said, "Oh, you mean in the ring?" Joe Frazier. Al split out the words. "Ugly Joe Frazier. He was strong, he knocked men down, he hit hard and he wouldn't fall. I hit him with everything I had, and he still wouldn't fall." "Here's a man," he said, "that knocked out Joe Frazier, knocked out Ken Norton, beat people I couldn't beat and he was gonna make me crumble. ALI ADMITTED HE WAS under more mental pressure for his recent fight against George Foreman than he was against Frazier. "I wasn't worried, but I just had a lot of pressure to see how much I would gain by beating him, getting my title back, and shutting up the world." Foreman, like Frazier, isn't one of All's favorite people. "He talks too much," Ali said. "I don't like fighters that talk to much. That's my job." The University of Kansas Rugby Club won its final home game of the year Sunday when it defeated the Topeka Rugby Club 44-0. Although he had said the Foreman fight would be his last, all now he had no KU's Rugby Club beats Topeka 44-0 The A team is now 11-2 on the season and 8-1 in Heart of America Rugby Football Union league play. KU will play the Kansas City Blyues Rugby Club Saturday at Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo., for the Union championship. Jon Mellon was the only KU player to score more than once, as the 'Hawks substituted freely and maintained a balanced line. But outstout was the squad's seventh of the year. "I'm gotta defend my title," he said. "I'm gonna deface him, the another four guys who are going to defend me or somebody in a country like Iran or Egypt. We really don't know. Right now, AFTER HE HAD DEFEATED Foreman, All said he wanted to fight Foreman and The KU B team also won Sunday, the B team beats kappa B team. The B team has an 8-1 win. Frazier in the same night. When he talked of this possibility, Ali got excited. "I'll go ten rounds with them both," Ali said. "I'll fight Frazier first, poor George Foreman next. They won't have any exits in front of me all the time and they don't believe it, so I want both of them in one night. I'll whop both George Foreman and Joe Frazier in one Besides Frazier and Foreman, the other man All enjoys talking about it is Howard Stapleton. "I've made that man so famous," Ali said. "I took a survey and the reason black folk love Howard Cosell is much that they see in a white guy make a out of him himself." "Most people in this country, you have to have some type of charisma to be famous or to be great; some type of talent or perseverance. You can tell that you don't need nothing to be great." AFTER OUR INTERVIEW ENDED, all of us, bodyguards included, went into a room to watch a show All filmed with the team, and attended at All's training camp in Deer Lake, Pa. soon as a camera clicks, a tape recorder goes on and people gather around. All puts the tape in a storage device. Watching Ali show the show, I could see he can be警情 when he wants to. As The combination of his desire to be in the spotlight and the money he's capable of making from boxing is what keeps Alli fighting hard, money and he likes being in main attraction. But away from a crowd, All can be as subdued as anyone. He knows his act attracts publicity and that's why he gives it. He says he likes cooky, but not as much as people think. While watching the film, All talked seriously about how he loved Africa, where he fought Foreman, and how he missed his family. He described the rustic setting at his training camp in Deerlake and his antique collection he has there. IN THE MIDDLE of watching the show, be turned suddenly and said. "I don't mean to brag, but I am the most wanted man in town," he says of my my own contracts and get what I want. Action of Ali and his sparring partners in the ring then flashed across the screen. Ali again turned suddenly and said, softly but with determination, another fighter like that in the whole word. Ali's older brother, who was one of the bodyguards, grinned and said, "Muham- mal All. That's my man. He's one of a billion." BEFORE WE LEFT, Ali gave us his recipe for life: "Take a few cups of love, one teaspoon of patience, one tablepoon of generosity, one teaspoon of care, and then sprinkle of concern, and then, mix willingness with happiness, add lots of faith and mix well. Then spread it over a lifetime and teach each and every deserving person you meet." The film ended and Ali was back around people, in the spotlight, as he prepared to leave the studio for his weigh-in. He gathered his party together, gave Maddox his word he'd give him the scoop if he heard anything big happen, and made his way toward the exit. He stopped, turned and said, "If you don't grin, you can't win." And with that, the baddest fighter in the whole world walked out the door. The crowd reacted loudly: "Yes! Yes! Yes!" "Then dammit, pay another $50," All said. Turning to the crowd during the Jones game, he screamed, "Do you want me to knock him?" cuse?" Al stared at the heckler and said, "Ask George Foreman." to most parts of Lawrence in City Limits Once he turned to Stu Bowens, the ring announcer, and said, "Howard Corliss get it back." The man chuckled. Somebody yelled at Ali during the scrap with Williams, "You're not the man with Williams."
