University Daily Kansan Monday, October 7, 1974 7 Japanese ambassador notes U.S. influence The exposure of Japanese people to the American way of life is forcing a change in the Japanese diet, the Japanese ambassador to the United States, Takeshi Yasukawa, said last night before about 30 members of the KU Japanese Club. Japanese students living in the United States have greatly influenced a change to Japanese education. He said the main reason he came to Kansas was to participate in the Kansas C.Mo., conference on Agricultural trade with changes with changes in the Japanese diet in mind. the ambassador and Mrs. Yasukawa arrived at the Council Room in the Kansas Union at 9 p.m., after attending a dinner at the Chancellor's office, and Chancellor and Mrs. Archie R. Dykes. He spoke in Japanese for about 30 minutes to a group composed almost entirely of college students. Executive Vice Chancellor Dan Wagner was on the podium with the Yasukawas. The agricultural meeting in Kansas City is important because Japan has few natural resources, Yasukawa said. In order to add meat to the Japanese diet, Japan must begin raising more cattle, and they must find ways to feed the cattle with their limited resources, he said. Jasukawa said Japanese industry temporarily had its growth halted by factors such as the energy crisis. He said cheap energy could cause pollution problems and wasn't a good solution to industrial problems. Yasukawa said Japanese industry堤革establish industries in the United States that would create jobs for the citizens and build the communities in which they are located. Yasukawa said he had no responsibility in the matter, but he thought Japan should take steps to encourage more foreign students to study in Japan. The number of Japanese students at the University of Kansas has greatly increased in the past few years, Nototuyi Yasu, Nagaya, Japan, graduate student and chairman of the Japanese Club, said. The club compasses all KU students from Japan, he said. A student suggested the Japanese government send the United States more information about Japan in return for the kindness shown the Japanese students in Japan had done. It said it was up to each Japanese student to repay kindness shown them by Americans. University's 4 airplanes used for research, travel By MONA DUCKWORTH Reporter Among the little-known research equipment owned by the University are four and Jan Roskam, professor of aerospace engineering, said recently that his department owned two of the planes. One of them, a Cessna Skyhawk, is used by David Roskam, professor of aerospace engineering, who works for personal transportation. Roskam said. "We use it only for official University business," he said. The other plane owned by the department is an experimental Cassini Cardinal donated by NASA. Roskam said the experimental plane was being studied with money supplied by a Nasa team. A third University-owned airplane is used primarily for Chancellor Archie R. Dykes' plane. NORMAN HOECKER, UNIVERSITY pilot of the C-45 Twin Beech used by Dykes, said Dykes usually needed the plane once or twice a week. "He uses the plane to fly to honors the faculty and the official University business." Hoecker said. Any department can use the plane, he has the use has to be approved by the Chancellor. "The department pays $50 an hour plus the pilot's expenses for the use of the plane." Hecker said. "If it's legitimate business, there are no problems." The Center for Research, Inc. (CRINC) uses the fourth plane owned by the University. Bob Walters, research facilities manager of CRINC, said the plane was a D-18 Twin Beech aircraft, an old military airplane that was government surplus. "WE USE IT for a research and development type thing," Walters said. We hope for 20 hours a year flight time but can only fly it when the money is available. IN ADDITION TO the four airplanes the University now owns, there are six of Wichita plans to give the University a new plane, informed sources told the Kansan. The Beech Corp. now is leasing KU a plane for testing. Jerry Jenks, one of the managers in the research, said the name of her company is Separate Surface Stability Augmentation." "NASA gave us a $700,000 research grant," Jenks said. "With part of the money, we leased a Model 99 Airline from which is the subcontractor on the program." Blast . . . From Page One she struck a match to light her cigarette, the match burned in a funny way. Lee asked Williburn how the match burned "funny". Williburn struck another match to show Lee. The explosion, which she didn't hear, pushed her to one side. Momentarily stunned, she put out a small fire in back of her and one to her right. For a split second, the match burned normally, and then there was a huge ball of fire in front of Willbern. Lee said. Lee heard a woman run across the field. Hame seemed to rush toward her, she said. UNSIDORF SAID she planned to sue Ubushco for damages on grounds of negligence. Wilbern had already gotten out of the building and was screaming for help. Lee bulked out of the building and went next door to the building, where that had been burned off her during the explosion. A policeman then drove to the building, and when he transferred to Walkins later that night. The conclusion of the blast stopped Long's car, which had been travelled about 130 miles. Jerry Long, Kansas City, Kan., freshman, saw the explosion as he was driving north across the Massachusetts Street bridge. He said the roof was blown into the air, he said. On Campus The board of the William Inga Memorial Theatre has issued a call for one-act plays written by current KU students. The scripts will be considered for production as part of an evening of oneacts to be presented in the Inge Theatre from Feb. 26 through March 7. Nielsen. **Corporelis is NW. 1.** Royalty payments for production will be made directly to the author and there are no restrictions on subject matter. KU grad honored Albert Swainson, a spring graduate of the University of Kansas, has been named a national winner in the 1974 Mark of Excellence Contest of Staten Island. Swainston will be honored along with seven other students, a student member of the newspaper at the society's national convention in November in Phoenix. The national winners were chosen from 93 regional finalists. More than 2,000 entries were received in the regional semifinals. Volleyball anyone?
