Monday, October 7,1974 5 SPORTS 'Hawks stampede No. Five Aggies 28-10 Associate Sports Editor Coaches, players, fans, bowl scouts and the men who make the national rankings all found out Saturday just what kind of football the University of Kansas has been KU's convincing 28-10 win over the Texas A&M Aggies, rated fifth in the nation, on a Band Day at Memorial Stadium proves to be an occasion that was a team worthy of national recognition. "We knew we had to put it all together," cornerback Steve Taylor said after the game. "They weren't overrated, but we were just underated. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but we should be rated in the top five." Throughout the game, which was watched by at least one bowl scout (from the Fiesta team) defense was outstanding. The Hawks officially put the game away in the second half. Although KU isn't likely to jump into the top five this week, the 'Hawks probably will break into the top 20 on the strength of the win over the Aggies. It was an impressive victory for KU in which the Jayhawks outscored, out-guided and out-hit A&M "If we can continue to put it all together like today," Head Coach Darnbrough told his squaw after the game, "we can be as good as we want to be. That was the greatest effort I've ever seen on a football field." In the locker room after the game, it was obvious that the KU squad knew it had played well against a good team—the pride was evident. By Sunday afternoon, Fambrough two mellowed some from his post-game superlatives. But he said KU's performance against the Aggies proved that the 'Hawks were capable of playing well against anyone in the country. "I'm just judging by our effort on Saturday, but with that type of effort, we've got a chance against anyone we play," Fambrigh said. "I can go back to Texas now," senior fullback Back Robert Miller, who is from Houston, said after the game. "They're always talking about the pride they've got there, and that no one from outside of Texas can beat them, but we've got pride too." The crowd of 36,230, who braved early morning thunderstorms to attend, also had some success. "The fans were a tremendous help," Farnbaugh said. "I've never seen people react like that. I'd just like to let the fans know how much we appreciated their support and how much it helped. They shared in the win." THE TURNING POINT in the game came late in the third quarter when quarterback McMichael hit Emmett Edwards on a 61-yard touchdown pass that put KUA ahead. Five times in the contest KU turned the ball over to the Aggies. But on three of these occasions, the KU defense stopped &M cold. Throughout the game, KU's defense held its own against the bigger Aggies and shut off &M's powerful wishbone attack. "We just turned it around the other way," Fambrigh said about the Aggies' size advantage. "I was a little worried in the first half—they were so physical I was worried how long we would be able to hold up. But there was nothing tactical about our defense's play. It was just hand-to-hand. KU shut off &A&M's strong inside attack early in the game. When the Agggies tried to move outside, KU cornerbacks Taylor and Eddie Lewis continually turned the play back inside where the Hawks' pursuit ended in the EM to short gains, according to Famborough. "We did line up a little closer and heads-up," defensive tackle Mike Butler said after the game. "And since their linemen were stuck, we just fired out. We just out-hit them." 14-10. But even though this was undoubtedly the tig play of the game, it was probably not the best. In the sixth inning, glover played properly with their outside shots, straight at the Aggeries in the second half. Twice the crowd of 67, 298 watched Denver move to the Kansas city one- and two-yard lines. But the Chiefs' defense, fired by Willie Martinez, was not a match, turned the Broncos away both times. But KU's performance wasn't mistake-free. "Their defense was set up to stop our outside stuff," Fambrough said. "But our game plan—because of their pursuit—was to go right at them." ROBERT MILLER WAS the main workhorse with 142 yards on 30 carries. Sophomore tailback Laverne Smith had his fourth straight 100-yard day with 135 yards against the Aggies, mostly on the strength against them, a 83-yard touchdown run late in the game. Kansas City, as after spotting Denver a 3-1 lead on Jim Turner's 41-yard goal field, struck back and rolled 9 yards on eight plays with Willie Ellison scoring from the one for Kansas City's first first-quarter touchdown of the season. The cunts are 2-2 in the AFC West. Ramsey took over the Denver quarterback chores at the start of the second half after Johnson injured his thumb. "In the first half, penalties hurt us, and there was that blocked punt. When you get one block, it can be a number of things—getting the snap back too slow or getting the off too slow or a breakdown in the kick. You can't have eliminated our mistakes. And there was never anything wrong with our effort," Fambrouch said. Both offenses were studies of futility most of the game. After Denver went ahead with it, he did not take the chiefs were virtually helpless against the Broncos' revived and charged-up defense. It was the blocked punt, which was returned to the KU four, that led to A&M's fullback Bucky Sams. But with 49 seconds left in the third quarter, McMichael hit Edwards for the 61-yard touchdown on a play the HUCK practice, and KU took control of the game. "We ran it out of a slot set, which was something they hadn't seen before," McMichael said after the game.
