Friday, October 4,1974 University Daily Kansan 9 Frank Robinson named first black manager "I want to be judged by my expertise on the field," Robinson said after the Cleveland Indians officially named him the club's 1975 field manager. CLEVELAND—Frank Robinson, smiling, jovial and proud, was named baseball's first black manager Thursday, but he said he wasn't classified by the color of his skin. From the Associated Press "I was born black and now that I'm a manager I guess I have to be a black man." The only man to be named Most Valuable Player in both the American and National leagues. Robinson replaces Ken Aspmore, who was fired. Robinson will be a playing manager and most likely will use himself as a designated hitter. "I really wanted to get my 2002 year as a player in, he said, like to go for 3,000 pts." Robinson needs 26 horns and 100 hits to reach those goals. He signed a one-year contract for $180,000. "I originally thought a multi-year contract was the most important thing to me," Johnson said. "But I'm hoping that my performance will be enough for another contract after this year." Baseball commissioner *Bowie Kuhn, *Robert League presses* Boise Maples and Robbie Hornsby If you miss Saturday's game against Texas A&M, or if you simply want to see part of it again, you will be able to see the highlights on ABC's weekly college football highlights show The KU-A&M game will be one of the games highlighted on the show. The show will be played at 11 a.m. Sunday on Channel 9. The University of Kansas women ada- tioned a walking around campus in new blazers. ABC to carry KU highlights This was one of the items discussed at the organizational meeting of the Kansas University Women's Intercollegiate Sports Club (KWIS) Wednesday night in Robinson Gymnasium. About 30 women attended the half hour meeting Penny Paulsen, KWIS president and standout pitcher on the women's softball team, told the group she thought the blazers had good way of instilling pride in the organization. "We want this club to mean something', Paulsen said. She suggested that the club might establish certain entrance standards, such as a minimum grade point average or a minimum number of letter points. Women's sport club examines priorities A committee was formed to examine the constitution of the club and to recommend possible changes. The amount of dues was left undecided until the next meeting. "We might be able to take a busload of supporters to a game at Kansas State for the game." Marian Washington, assistant athletic director for women's sports, told the group she had talked with the Student Union about chartering buses to out-of town games. "We have to support each other," Paulsen states, "anating a major goal of the organization." Washington also suggested such other activities for the group as acting as a cheerleader, holding championships in high schools through presentations, raising money for extra events, encouraging cheerleaders for women's basketball team representatives as source people. Other officers of KWIS are Becky Millard, secretary, and Debbie Lauerkilm, auditor. The next meeting of the club will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Room 205 of the Metropolitan Building. This is the KU women's intercollegiate sports schedule for the coming week; Saturday - Field Hockey, Grimsel at KU, 10 a.m. on the field west of field Hockey, William Jellison vs. KU at Liberty, Mv. The University of Kansas cross country team leaves Friday for Stillwater, Oka-, to compete in the Oklahoma State Jamboree Saturday. Bob Timmons, KU coach, said the meet would provide stiff competition for the Hawks. Competitors include Eastern New Mexico, last year's NAIA champion, and Arizona State's Gold Class Invitational, a meet in which KU finished second earlier this season. Safety Kurt Knoff, who missed the last two games because of a broken thumb, will also return to the starting line-up. Timmons said Oklahoma State would be the only other Big Eight school at the meet. About eight to 10 teams will enter the game on Saturday, August 9th in its fourth-place finish at last year's meet. beside him during the conference. Tim Tobin, junior, will return to action for the Hawks this week after being out with a broken knee. Cross country team meets for Jamboree Jackie Robinson, who was no relation to Frank, became the major leagues' first black baseball player in 1947. He died in 1972. "To say that this is a proud day for me would be an understatement," Robinson said. "I had I one wish in the world today, but I cannot find Jackie Robinson here to see this happen." "I don't think I could have stood the pressure or have gone through what Jackie had to," said Robinson, who broke a 105-year baseball tradition of white field bosses. "I don't think there is any similarity between the situation and Jackie's," he said. "The situation have changed, the old has changed; things are just completely different." Robinson said he realized that fans, the Kuhn said this was the first manager announcement he had ever attended, and President Gerald Ford sent a telegram of congratulations. "But that pressure is an outside pressure," Robinson said. "I don't feel any pressure from within, and that's the most important thing to me." Junior Bob Swift will handle the long field goals and kickoffs and freshman walk-on Monte Hobbs will kick the extra points and short field goals. Knoff, Weidner return Coach Don Fambrough, KU football coach, announced yesterday that regular kicker Mike Love was still bothered by a back injury and play against Texas &M if he is needed. media and baseball's establishment would now be watching him as a black manager. Linebacker Odell Weidner is still "It has been a hard week of practice," Fambridge said. "We had to prepare for a little different look, but I think we are ready."
