8 Friday, October 4,1974 University Daily Kansan SPORTS KU to taste Texas A&M's T-bone offense By JIM SHELDON Associate Sports Editor An offense called the T-bone, a halfback named Bean and 103 high school bands all will be part of the University of Kansas at St. Louis at 1:39 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Stadium. Associate Sports Editor But Bean is just one part of an A&M offense that has been averaging 345 yards rushing a game out of its unique T-bone offense. The T-bone is basically a wishbone offense, used by Oklahoma's Texans, but its alignment olds the T for instead of moving the fullback up between the quarterback and the two halfbacks, in also with wishbones, the Aggies keep their three running backs in a straight line across the back. "What we use is basically the wishbone philosophy," A&M coach Emory Bellard said in a telephone interview Thursday. "The biggest reason for the changes we've made to it is get a better blocking situation on the corners and also to get our secondary receivers out of the backfield on pass plays." During the game, the man to watch for from A&M could be junior halfback Bubba Beam. Beam has the A&M Aggies' first three games and has averaged 8.3 yards a carry. KU coach Don Fambrough said defense against the wahshone depended on who the "It depends on who you're playing," Fambrough said, "but against A&M we will be trying to stop their inside game. They'll probably come at us with a bit of backfilling and not being too aggressive where they send two backs in over tackle ahead of the ball carrier." The bands will take part in the annual Band Day activities, which will begin with a parade in downtown Lawrence at 9:00 a.m. The band will include a halftime performance. This will be KU's first look at a wishbone offense this week but it won't be the last. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will be in play when they meet KU in Hit Eight play. A&M's T-bone offense has not only racked up yardage, but it also has the Agggies to three straight wins and number four and five rankings in the national polls. A&M won both the Champs and then won consecutive road games against LSU and Washington. "Any team that can beat LSU (21-14) at night in Baton Rouge to be good," Fambridge said. "You talk to almost any coach and that's one place they fear to play." This will be the fourth week in a row the Aggies have faced a team that uses the teer-t-Vence. However, Bellard said KU would be A&M's toughest opponent so far. "KU's running game is similar to LSU's, but Kauaas runs a better little - at least at this stage," he said. "LSU might progress in their passing game as the season goes on." "KU has a lot of offensive balance, also. Washington did too, but KU is more talented." The Aggies' defense has also been tough in its opening games, Fambridge said. "They use what we call a 4-3, but sometimes it looks like a 6-1." Fambrough said. "They are hard to get outside on because of their pursuit. They've got great speed in their secondary, which is also their most experienced unit." Probable lineups For both squads, Saturday's game will be the last non conference game. AM begins its southwest conference schedule next week against Texas Tech, who upset Texas, the favorite, in favor of KU. KU will take on traditional rival Kansas State next week.
