KU's Miller and Smith lead Big 8 yard gainers
KANSAS CITY, Mo—Robes Miller, senior back at Kansas, has jumped into the lead in running with the football in the Big Eight Conference.

Miller has rushed 51 times for 374 yards an average of 7.3 yards and a game average of 124.7. This record is slightly better than that of teammate Laverne Smith, who has an even 124-yard game average on 50 runs for 372, according to Big Eight Service Bureau statistics released yesterday.
Smith has a slightly better play average of 7.4. Joe Washington of Oklahoma, who was first until last Saturday when he saw only limited action in the Sooners' 72-3 victory over Utah State, dropped to third with a game average of 108.5.
Scott McMichael of Kansas continues to top the passers, completing 25 of 51 passes for 387 yards. He is followed by Dave Humm and Will Breslow. Wayne Stanley of Stateau, 13 of 34 for 249
Dave Logan of Colorado has moved ahead in pass receiving, having caught 11 for 135 yards. Kansas' Emmett Edwards is second with 10 receptions for 204 yards and Oklahoma State's Gerald Bain is third with seven for 127.

The leading punter is David Spare of Kansas State, who has kicked 12 times for an average of 47.8 yards. Missouri's Tony Gillick is out front in punt returns, five for 129 yards and a 25.8-yard average. Joe Stewart of Missouri has returned four kickoffs for 110 yards and a 27.5-yard average.
Six players have intercepted two passes, Scott Hill and Signey Brown of Oklahoma, and Gambal莫 of Kansas State, Gillick and Rob McKinley of Missouri and Barry Hill of Iowa State.
Abby Daigle, the Oklahoma State placekicker, has the most points scored, 27, and is tied with Washington for average points per game, nine. Washington has 18 points. Westbrook of Nebraska and Arthur Balley of Kansas State each has 24 points and an eight-point player and Mike Coyle of Nebraska's 22 for 7.3.
All of Daigle's points have come on placekicks, five field goals and 12 of 12 extra points. The same is true of Coyle, who is second in placekicking. Kansas State's goalkeeper had 16 saves with 11 of 11 extra points and three field goals for 20 points and a 6.7-point average.

PITTSBURG-H Manny Sanpailuer's run-scoring infield single in the 10th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-4 victory over the national League East Division championship.

The victory eliminated the St. Louis Cardinals from the division race. Pittsburgh wound up one and a half games in the Cards, who were rained out at Montreal.
The Pirates started the 10th inning
against Cabul rebelher Ken Frailing. Al Oliver tripped into the left field corner with one out. Wille Stargell and pinch hitter Glen Clinus shot from a midfield goal, and Oscar Zamora replaced Frailing.
Sangillen then dumped a slow roller down the third-base line and the Pirates had their 18th come-from-behind victory of the year.
Pittsburgh tied the game with two runs in the ninth inning, the second one coming when Cubs 'catcher Swisher turned a ball before strikeout into a run-scoring pass ball.
