Wednesday, October 2.1974 University Daily Kansan --- Limit on vitamin dosage proposed By ANITA SOLTER Reporter Vitamins A and D should be regulated because they are toxic in excessive amounts, University of Kansas health specialists said yesterday. "The real question is public welfare and safety, to insure that people do not self-destruct or to the level of toxicity," said Howard Mossberg, dean of the School of Pharmacy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a limit of the strength of vitamins to 150 per cent of the recommended allowance. A single Vitamin C tablet, for example, would be limited in strength to 50 per cent more than the minimum daily requirement. The FDA would also set dosage levels of multivitamins. Vitamins that exceed the limit would be classified as vitamins available only by classification, being vitamin B12. Duane G. Wenzel, professor of pharmacology and toxicology, said regulation should also be considered for foodstuffs that contain pharmaceutical additives, such as dairy products and cereals. ★★★ No cure to cold KU doctor says There is no documentation for the popular belief that large doses of Vitamin C help prevent the common cold, Dr. Martin Welch said. The Student Health Service, said yesterday. Excessive Vitamin C may cause rather than prevent problems, he said. The stomach lining may be irritated by the chemicals that give the Vitamin C tablets a citrus flavor. Also, Vitamin C may be harmful to those prone to kidney stones. "There is no cure for the cold, but spread of infection can be lessened by covering your mouth to sneeze or cough," Wollmann said. There are so many strains of virus that no one knows why an person will get a cold. "The individual's own immune responses determine whether he will be a cold," writes the book. These individual responses make research difficult, he said. A report on studies made in Canada and Great Britain indicates that traces of zinc contained in Vitamin C tablets may be what prevents cold, he said. Physicians in the Vietnam War indicated that zinc helped to heal wounds. The importance of zinc is just speculation he said, but definite results may be expected. Grants open for programs in humanities More than $100,000 in awards is available annually for Karsans who want to explore current public issues affecting their lives and communities. The awards are given by the Kansas Committee for the Humanities (KCH), and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and are federally funded. "The field humanist program is new" and Griffin, "but KCH has been making grants." Louis G. Griffin, curator of the Kansas Collection at Spencer Library, recently was appointed one of eight field humanists for KCH. The appointments are part of a KCH experiment to encourage greater public interest in the humanities. Last year Griffin received an award to a movie titled "Junction City: 1890- 1915." "It examined the impact of technology and urban growth upon social behavior and human values in Junction City, Kansas," said Griffin. "The purpose of the grants is to support community programs that examine current public issues and reflect the humanities viewpoint." As a field humanist, Griffin will explain KCH's policies to local organizations interested in learning more. "I should be able to help them plan their programs and prepare KCH grant applications," he said. "I can also serve as a contact between the community organization and other academic humanists." A program must involve academic humanists to receive funding from KCH. "This is simply anyone who is involved in the arts or humanities on a college campus," said Griffin. "The sponsoring organization must also provide matching scholarships not in dollars. It could be the use of building, equipment or volunteer time." Other requirements are that the program be aimed at the out-of-school adult public and that it reflect this year's KCH theme, "Changing Kansas Communities: Exploring the Role of Human Values in Shaping Public Policy." Last year's KCH funded programs included a traveling multi-media exhibit, a television home survey in Topeka and forums. "It is important," said Griffin, "that a program not to be prescriptive. It should raise questions, make people aware of the potential consequences, but not attempt to give answers." "Finally, I hope people will try to create in the form of their programs," he said. have vitamins for prescriptions if the proposals went into effect. "A heavy demand for vitamins beyond the recommended dosage would infringe on the physician's time," he said. "We do not require it to a deluge of requests for vitamins." Physicians at the health service now prescribe some vitamins for treating illnesses, Wollmann said, but they don't treat many patients for excessive doses. Excessive Vitamin A is seen most often in children or older people, he said, and causes night blindness. Vitamin D excesses cause elevation of the calcium in the blood, which results in "Selling vitamins by prescription is bound to raise the cost because pharmacists' time will be required for record keeping." Wenzel said. "However, the price of multivitamins sold over the counter should not increase." weakened bones, impaired kidney function, itching and vomiting, Wollmann said. Mossberg said the proposed regulations might decrease the demand for vitamins. Wenzel said vitamins requiring a prescription might be sold in packages of 100 units. Wollmann said he hoped people would not remeasure balanced diet than on multicultures or vitamins. Improvement in the University's reputation across the state may be one reason for increasing its student enrollment this fall, by Dyck, dean of admissions and records. Although official enrollment figures haven't yet been released by the Kanass Board of Regents, preliminary figures indicate a fall enrollment of 20,173 students at the Lawrence campus. This is an increase of 1,490 from last fall. Total University enrollment is estimated at 21,898, an increase of 1,566. Image aids growth, Dyck says "We have 300 to 400 more freshmen than a year ago," Dyck said. "There's Dyck said he thought Chancellor Archie R. Dykes and the faculty had done much to enhance the image of the University in the state. Students also are more concerned this year about the image of their school, he said. been throughout the state an improvement in the reputation of the University." The University has gained national recognition in several ways, Dyck said. "We had a good football team, a good basketball team and a Rhodes scholar last year," he said. "We had pretty good publicity." Officials won't know the specific reasons for increased enrollment until final enrolment figures are broken down, Joe McFarland, academic counselor for the Regents, said yesterday. "I think once we see what class sizes are, we'll have more information," he said. If graduate school enrollment is up, Mr. Furand said, it may be because students are not college-ready. The Regents are expected to release final enrollment figures for all Kansas schools such as "information," he said. An increase in freshman class enrollment could mean more students entering to a college career than are immediately entering the job market, he said.
