10 Wednesday, October 2.1974 University Daily Kansan Cancer therapies successful; research continues By PAULA JOLLY Cancer is one of today's most common and least understood diseases. Many people don't know exactly what it is, or what the chances for survival are. But because of the recent cancer operation on Betty Ford, wife of President Gerald Ford, cancer has come to national attention. According to Loren J. Humphrey, professor and chairman of surgery at the KU Medical Center, cancer is a growth that invades and can spread throughout the body. He said the most frequent type of cancer in men was lung cancer, while women were most frequently victims of breast cancer. In men and women with large intestine infection, they are most common. "Breathe biopsy is probably the most frequently performed operation in the United States." Humphrey said, "but only one in eight hibiscus proves cancerous." Breast cancer can be fought with more tools than are available for any other form of cancer, he said. And the survival rate is higher than it is for lung cancer. *p* or women with breast cancer that has not spread to surrounding lymph nodes, 60 to 80 per cent will survive for five years." Humphrey said. "If there is cancer in the lymph nodes, 30 to 50 per cent will live five years." In contrast, only one of three lung cancer patients can be helped by surgery, and only 25 per cent of those helped will be alive five years later. Humbryh said. The radical mastectomy is still the most effective surgery for breast cancer, Humphrey said. The lumpectomy in which only the lump is removed, has usually resulted in a higher recurrence rate and a death rate than other types of breast surgery. Radiation therapy is used when it is possible that some cancer still remains untreated. Chemotherapy is most helpful for people with certain cancers such as Hodgkin's disease, which is characterized by inflammation of the lymph nodes of the neck, armpits and groin, and leukemia, and for people with recurrent cancer, Humphrey said. It is not curative for solid organ cancers. One of the experimental treatments for cancer is immunotherapy. Humphrey said the Med Center had been a pioneer in immunotherapy since 1966. He work was being done with vaccine from dead cancer cells. "Immunotherapy looks as good now as chemotherapy," he said. "It has proven effective." Miracle cures and quackery are still problems, according to Humphrey. "The miracle cures usually drain the patient of money, deny proper treatment until too late and give false hope to the patient," Humphrey said. "In the fiffes," he said, "people in general thought a person who had cancer should make out his wife, because death would soon occur. In the sixies, the public thought that there was a 50-60 chance to beat cancer—but they thought a recurrence of cancer after an operation meant the patient should make out his will. Now people are learning that cancer patients can have chance, and that recurrence can be fought. According to Humphrey, a major cause of cancer patient in his family's attitude. "Many families feel the patient shouldn't be told the whole truth about his disease, but about 99 per cent of the patients would rather know." Humphrey said. where the Lawrence campus is a center for cancer research, Arnold J. Repta, associate professor of pharmaceutical chemistry, is director of the Cancer Research Institute National Cancer Institute (NCI) contract. Cytotoxic agents are potentially useful against cancer, Repta said, but are difficult to administer. "We're trying to cause reversible alteration in certain cytotoxic agents," Repta said. "We want to make the cytotoxic agent stable or soluble in solution in the syringe, and then make it revert to its original state once it is injected." "We have about 120 patients so far, and we need many more before we have reliable statistics on whether this is going to work," Zimbrick said. Zimbrick said the differences in readings on the electron spin resonance instrument could also be helpful in monitoring the therapy of a cancer patient. resonance instrument. There are also more molecules in the blood of cancer patients. L. L. Houston, associate professor of historical archaeology at the University called Kilden, which is found in caster beans. PRE-LAW COUNSELING PROGRAM (Chancery Club) All students who filled out class visitation schedules may pick them up beginning Wed., Oct.2 in the Law School Annex. Classes begin Mon., Oct.7. Finalists for the HOPE (Honor to the Outstanding Progressive Educator) Award are Jess H. McNish, adjunct professor of business; Caler M. Pickett, professor of journalism; David Quadagno, associate professor of journalism; John Senior, professor of comparative literature, and Lee F. Young, associate professor of journalism. According to Zimbrik, doctors don't have very good methods to tell how a patient is responding to a certain therapy. Patients are often unable to see a change in the reading if the patient is improving, and a different change if the patient is deteriorating. Seniors must present their current KU registration card in order to vote. The balloting will be in the lobby of the Kansas Union, in front of Malot Hall and at the Information Booth, across from Bailey Hall, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. HOPE voting begins today Those seniors who don't have class cards will also be required to pay 25 cents. Balloting by seniors to select the winner of the award is scheduled for today and tomorrow. Transplant to a larger pot when needed, using fresh soil, but do not fertilize for a few months—then feed again as usual. The PRAYER PLANT gets its nickname from the unusual way it's leaves move from their normal horizontal daytime position, to a vertical position at night. Give your plant good indirect or filtered sunlight and an average home temperature. Every week or so, give your plant a light "sudsing"—but two drops of biodegradable dishwashing soap in your spray water, and spray generously, being sure to get to the underside of the plant to collect also. They hate the taste! Rinse with a clear water spray. Given this simple care, your Prayer Plant will give you interest and pleasure for years to come. the leaves of the Prayer Plant curl up into their vertical position at night to hold in moisture, so be sure to spray daily and water regularly with tepid water, keeping the soil barely moist. Provide good drainage so that the roots do not sit in water—they too like to breathe. You may want to place the pot on a "dry well", lie, on a layer of pebbles in the pot's saucer, keeping these water to just below the level of the bottom of the pot. The resulting humidity will give you a healthier and more luxurious plant.
