Wednesday, October 2, 1974 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 9 SPORTS Skinny freshman QB a hustler By DUFF LEWIS Sports Reporter Many of the fans watching the University of Kansas home football opponent Saturday against the Florida State Seminoles were thumbing through their programs, trying to figure out who the new Jayhawk quarterback was. Four things about the new man stood out. First, he weighed almost 100 pounds less than the Seminole linemen trying to throttle him in sideways, it looked as if he could disappear. Second, he was a freshman. There aren't many freshman quarterbacks in the Big Eagle. Third, he was black. Kansas quarterback have been, almost exclusively. Fourth, he was moving the Jayhawk use down the field at an impressive rate. The programs identified the newcomer as Melvin Barrens, a goal-post thin Melvin at 155 pounds, Barrens appeared to be a lightweight. But at quarterback, he was proved to be a heavyweight contender. Barrens led the Jayhawks over a large portion of the 560 yards of offense generated against Florida State. On his own, he rushed twice for 30 yards, including a 26-yard scamper. And there were some big defensive players waiting to mash his 155-foot body into the ground. University Daily Kansan "When a big guy comes in," Barrens said, "the first thing I do is try not to think of him as being such a big guy. I just think of him as a man I've got to get away from. If he decides to tackle me, I just go with the blow and roll, and not to let him on my face." Only once has a big guy fallen on him. That was in the Oklahoma State football championships last fall when Barrens led Tulsa's Booker T. Washington High School to victory. On the third play of the game, a big guy fell on him and broke one of his ribs "I played the whole first half with a broken rib," Barrens said, "and didn't know it until halftime, when it started getting stiff." He sat out the second half. "They didn't pout," he said. "they hated me, they hated me." Jayhawk Veer-T wasn't tremendously difficult. Washington High School used a wishbone offense and averaged 40 points a game last year. Barreis ran a Tulsa team by passing over the top defense in one-option quarterback position that season. "I think by running the wishbone I had a little advantage over some guys who may not have run a triple-option offense," Barrens said. "The only thing that I have two receivers to throw to now, compared to just one receiver in my primary receiver. Now, I have a chance to throw and get my running game going, too." Schools such as Notre Dame and KState wouldn't give Barrens those chances. "Kansas was, in my opinion, the best big school which gave me a chance," Barrens said. "Most of the schools that tried to recruit me said I was too small." The KU record in the Big Eight was another factor in his decision to play for the Jayhawks. Besides, a berth with Kansas would give Barrens a chance to beat both of his home-state schools, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. MU bumps JV "I'm looking forward to those games," Barrens said. "If I could just beat OU, I can go back home and jump for joy. I've got a lot of friends enrolled, and a few are on the football team. I've got more friends at O-State, but OU is the one to be beat because they're considered to be the No. 1 school." Getting a chance to play against OU and GETU might be hard for Barrens. Kansas has two quarterbacks, starter Scott McMichael and quarterback and Barrens must battle for playing time, "I'm not in too much of a hurry," Barrens said, "but I'm going to be trying my best. I want to go against McMichael and Kraftt for one year to figure out the figure one year 1 be able to be start up." Accordingly, the transition to the The next time Kansas football fans thump through their programs, trying to figure out what thin, gangling quarterback is, it might be them. If they know that he can handle the job. The University of Kansas junior varsity team beat Georgia State 14-0 in the Missouri Titans 14-6 Monday afternoon. Missouri scored twice in the second quarter to take a 14-0 halftime lead in what was a mistake-riden game for the Jahywahs. The "Hawks stopped themselves five times inside the 20-yard line with fumbles and interceptions. The only score by KU came in the fourth quarter on a Mike Lowe to deff Hodgson pass for 25 yards. The Jiahyns are now 0-2 and are able to play their next game at K-State.
