Tuesday, October 1, 1974 University Daily Kansan 9 Ill janitor's absence felt by many It isn't often that a junior's absence is noticed. But when Joe Sample, Kansas university student was all recently he received a small amount of money from the people who worked in the Union. The reason so many people missed Sample was that these people, whose rugs he vacuumns and whose offices he cleans, are his friends. Signs of Samples' friendship with the office personnel—flowers—can be found in almost every windowill on the third floor where he works. The flowers, one of Samples' hobbies, are grown at his home in McLouth, northwest of Lawrence. "I first started growing the flowers about a year ago with four geraniums," he said. "Now I've got 30 flowers in water at home that I'm going to bring here in two to three weeks. Just whoever wants them is welcome to them." Sample said he became interested in flowers about four years ago. "People just seem to enjoy them more these days," he said. "Since I've been interested in them, I've noticed that it's surprising how many men have become sexually active, and we are a slassy type of thing, only for girls and the women. But now men are interested in them. "I get complimented quite a bit on them. That's my pay for bringing them in." Sample has worked at the Kansas Union office. 858. Before that he farmed near McLoughlin. Sample works at the Union five days a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. He said he was happier now than at any other time in his life, not only with students and students whom he worked around. Gym use rules to be announced Student use of the new floor in Allen Field House will be decided and announced by the Advisory Policy Committee for the field house Monday. "I enjoy the students around here," he said. "They never change—we've always had good and bad students. They have worked hard, even in our course, but they're all pretty nice people." In a meeting yesterday the committee discussed the rules and rules for the use of the new facilities It is expected that students will be able to use the field house in evenings during the week and during most of the day on weekends when there are prior scheduled events. "things seem to go in fads, you know," he said. "One student just follows another so you can't look down on them. I remember when men never use to carry umbrellas because it was what women did. Now they does. Even I have an umbrella now." In addition to working in the Union and growing flowers at home, Sample is active in McLouth. One of his biggest activities is running camp once a month, all year long. "About once a month, I just load up the car with as many boys as I can," he said. "Sometimes I have help with them and other times not, but we always go. The boys really learn things—about nature and cooking—from that kind of thing." "If it wasn't for friends, this world would be 'if you're sad place,' he said. "You know, if you don't pay dollar payments you still couldn't buy a friend because of the thing you can't put a price taon on." His many friends are what Sample seems to value most. Square, 54, doesn't plan to retire soon. He needs a hard work until he was 62, "if the good Lord is in it." "A person should remain active as long as he's able," he said. "Activity helps keep your strength up. You get weak just lying around." And as long as he's around Sample extends an invitation anyone to come here. --- Campus Madhouse Tee-shirts printed 411 W. 14th NOTICE 2-day minimum on order 15c a letter The Student Senate is accepting budget requests for the allocation of student activity fees.
