6 Tuesday, October 1, 1974 University Daily Kansan Sailing deaths spur precautions Last spring two University of Kansas students died in a sailing accident at Perry Lake. A third companion survived. All three were members of the KU Sailing Club. Their deaths are still a sensitive subject to Bill Lober, commodore of the Sailing Club. The sailboard the three were in, a Flying Junior, was found only recently. This year, the KU Sailing Club has taken several precautions for greater safety. Its 40 active members have three new sailboats, better life jackets and a 14-foot high-speed rescue boat. Lober said last week. He said the rescue boat should enable the club to eliminate future tragedies. "It will save equipment, time and lives," he said. A 22-foot sloop was donated to the club. Members are reconditioning the sloop at the club's headquarters at the Perry Yacht Club so they can have it ready for sailing by mid-October. The additional boats make it possible to enlarge the club, Lober said. To acquaint more people with the sport, the club has a website and social media presence in community through the Free University. Instruction is offered in basic sailing, basic navigation, water safety and racing. The club participates annually in a series of conferences, the Mid West College Sailing Association and the Midwest Coast Sailing Association. "We go on a regular racing circuit and go Minority office staffers named Del Shanker, executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas, yesterday announced two appointments to the Office of Minority Affairs. Gary F. Flanigan, former director of Ellsworth Hall, was appointed director of Supportive Educational Services and Frances Levier, a member of the KU Committee on Indian Affairs, was appointed assistant director of minority affairs. Flanigan received his B.A. in psychology and African studies from KU in 1973. He has been assistant director of Oliver Hall, a residence hall counselor for UpwardBound and a lecturer in the department of African studies. Supportive Educational Services is a program designed to help disadvantaged students succeed. Lever received his B.A. in social sciences and secondary education from Hofstra University, of Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., and received his M.A. in educational administration from KU. He won a Ford Foundation Fellowship for American Indians in 1975-76, served on the American Association of Colleges' celler in 1973 and was a member of the selection committee for director of minority affairs. to a rogata almost every weekend until late in November," Lober said. "This year we will log almost as many miles as the football team." Last weekend several racing crews from the club traveled to Oshkosh, Wis., for a A repatta usually has from 10 to 16 races each day over a triangular course, Lober When traveling to a weekend regatta, club members must pay for their own food and accommodations. They receive money to pay for part of the gasoline expenses. Lober said the club sponsored two regattas each year at Perry Lake. He said many midwestern universities would attend the two regattas. In addition to racing, the club also sponsors other activities. Lober said members of the KU Sailing Club received an auxiliary membership in the Perry Yacht Club. KU members sometimes are crew members on larger boats owned by members of the Perry Yacht Club, he said. This year the club is planning two trips to Florida, where members will charter and fly a plane.
