University Daily Kansan Tuesday, October 1, 1974 3 Cancellations plague KU concerts A series of concert cancellations at the University of Kansas has made it seem that KU is an unpopular place for performing groups. Most recent of the cancellations was the Smothers Brothers, the television and stage comedy team. They were scheduled to take over a role at a skate at the homecoming concert, Oct. 28. Mike Muller, Student Union Activities (SUA) programs director, said yesterday that they brothers Brothers canceled because they weren't special during KU's Homecoming Week. The contract the comedy team signed, said, allowed cancellation up to 30 days before the show. "Their agent called me on Sept. 25, which was the last day they could legally cancel," he said. "They made it with nine hours to spare." Groups can cancel if they have legitimate reasons and are not said. If the artist is involved in a stage production, he or she may be denied. major television special, he can cancel. Muller said there was a standard cancellation clause in contracts for performers and gave anywhere from 30 to 60 days to cancel before the scheduled date of the concert. "After that we can take them to court," Miller said. "But it doesn't do any good for us to say to the students that we're getting revenge. We want to get another concert." The other concerts that were canceled, Miles said, didn't work out for other reasons. "We've just had lousy luck," he said. "Other things came up." he said. Miller said that negotiations with Chicago, George Harrison and Elton John began last spring. SUA had solid verbal ties to the group, he said, but circumstances kept them away. to stay in Hawaii a day longer and not to come to KU." "Ichicago decided it couldn't work KU into its schedule," he said. "Ellton John is scheduled for a concert in Hawaii a few days before we wanted them. They decided Miller said George Harrison chose not to perform in Lawrence so that he could do a concert in Tuba, Okla., where he has several friends. KU concert facilities have nothing to do with cancellations. KU is committed to accommodate 15,000 people Miller said, which enables many people to pay to see a concert and the groups make "Performing artists are in a business," he said, "and they're in business to make money." When asked about the controversy surrounding last year's Allman Brothers' concert cancellation, Miller said the promoters had caused the problem. the promoters, two representatives of Wake West Productions, change the concert date. President Thieu is facing the most serious political challenge of his nearly 10 years in power. He said that the first three times the date was changed, SUA was able to cooperate, but that the last change to Nov. 9 couldn't be arranged. The University Events Committee agreed that concerts have to be scheduled 10 days and the Miracles were to perform Nov. 10. The opposition involves a constituency that traditionally has been the backbone of the Saigon government—the Roman Catholics.
