+ THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN THURSDAY. AUGUST 28, 2014 PAGE 3B + QUOTE OF THE DAY "I don't care how we do it," Manager Ned last said, "Is that way really fun? Yeah, to win a game in that fashion, where you've kind of been stymied all night long and then the ninth inning comes up — base hit and, kaboom, the game's over." KANSAS CITY ROYALS FACT OF THE DAY The Royals have won 25 of their last 33 games. KANSAS CITY ROYALS TRIVIA OF THE DAY Q: How many walk off home runs has Alex Gordon hit in his career? A: Two KANSAS CITY ROYALS THE MORNING BREW Royals give fans hope for first time in 28 years Lighten your seatbelt and hold on because the Kansas City Royals are about to take you. Royals are about to take you on a whole new journey this September. Mainly due to the fact that the Royals haven't been in first place this late in the season since 1985. That's right, 1985. Judging by the faces around campus, I would say that most students, and some faculty, weren't even alive when George Brett took them to the playoffs and won the World Series in controversial fashion 28 years ago. Just in case 28 years isn't daunting enough, let's list a few things that have happened since then: The United States has had five Presidents, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, "The Simpsons" have aired 552 episodes and the Kansas men's basketball team By Austin Wagoner @awagoner23 nas won two National Titles and have had three different coaches. Now, in 2014, the Royals are giving fans something they don't get much of: hope. There's hope that Kansas City made the right decision by sticking with GM Dayton Moore. Hope that a team in an average media market with a less than an average budget can field a playoff team. Hope that a team full of prospects can pull together with an ace, James Shields, and give the community something to cheer for in September. The Royals are going to do this by playing tough defense and getting base hits. According to Major League Baseball's site, the Royals are last in home runs, but second in team batting average for the American League. The Royals are going to go further with solid starting pitching, boasting the 4th best ERA in the AL and finishing with premier closer, Greg Holland. In the past 28 years, the boys in blue have shown flashes of brilliance and neverending years of terribleness. Going to a Royals game traditionally has been about cheap tickets and drunken foolishness. But there's something about this year, something in the air that makes fans appreciate the game a little more. They say this game is a game of inches and there will be entertainment in watching the Royals fight for the next 31 games to get a chance to play in October. — Edited by Logan Schlossberg This week in athletics Wednesday No events Thursday No events Friday Volleyball Utah Valley 11:30 a.m. Lawrence Saturday Cross Country Bob Timmons Dual Classic 9 a.m. Volleyball Lipscomb 7:30 p.m. Lawrence Sunday Women's Soccer Wake Forest 1 p.m. Volleyball Creighton 2 p.m. Lawrence Monday No events Tuesday No events Chicago's Little League champs return as heroes ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO The ballpark gleams, exactly as the home of the Little League World Series national championship team should. Free of graffiti and absent so much as a kid's initials carved in the grandstand benches, Jackie Robinson Park is outfitted with a digital scoreboard and mechanical pitching machines. It sits in a tidy neighborhood of brick one-story homes and manicured lawns on Chicago's South Side. While the words "South Side" are often shorthand beyond Chicago for gangs, shootings and poverty, the people who live here see a more nuanced picture. "These are middle-class fam ilies," said Jamieson Clay, a relative of Joshua Houston, the pitching and hitting hero of the U.S. championship game. "Ninety percent of the boys have both a mother and a father at home with them and the fathers are playing a pretty active role in their sons' lives." The beloved Jackie Robinson West All Stars, Chicago's first all-black team to claim the national title, autographed T-shirts and posters at the ballpark Wednesday before boarding trolley buses for a parade in their honor. They're only beginning to realize the impact they've had on the city. "I didn't know it was going to be like this," outfielder Darion Radcliff said as he posed for photos. "I feel like a celebrity." In the days to come, he and the other players will be held up as models for how to keep vulnerable kids out of trouble. Radio host Matt McGill said to the crowd at Wednesday's pre-parade rally, "Look at those kids. You can be a star without a gun in your holster, without a gun in your waistband." And before thousands at Millennium Park downtown, Chicago White Sox executive vice president Ken Williams urged kids to "pick up a ball or a glove or a book, a paint stick, a science project (and) put down the guns." 785-864-4358 HAWKCHALK.COM PORTER JOBS Large family-owned car dealership is looking for several P/T porters immediately.
