Liberty Hall celebrates 'Wizard of Oz' milestone CODY SCHMITZ @Cody_Schmitz "The Wizard of Oz" celebrated its 75th anniversary this month and Liberty Hall Cinema is marking the event by holding a screening of the classic film. It will be shown at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. "It's something that's pertinent to the state of Kansas," said Brendan Costello, the Projection Assistant at Liberty Hall Cinema. "The Wizard of Oz' is a classic piece of cinema and we wanted to bring that to the community." The movie premiered in Oconomowoc, Wis., on Aug. 12, 1939 — 75 years ago this month. The studio spent about $2.7 million on the creation of the film, so the studio's executives wanted to see if the movie would play well in the Midwest before they opened it to a broader audience. Oconomowoc is the hometown of Meinhardt Raabe, one of the munchkins, and the home state of Herbert Stothart, who scored the movie. BRENDAN COSTELLO Projection assistant Betty Chung, a junior from Orange County, Calif., said that two things come to mind for her friends when they think about the Sunflower State; wheat fields and "The Wizard of Oz." "It's something that's pertinent to the state of Kansas. 'The Wizard of Oz' is a classic piece of cinema and we wanted to bring that to the community." "My friends call me Dorothy now because I live in Kansas," Chung said. Deven Knapp, a freshman from Overland Park, said he thinks the film stereotypes Kansas, which is something that the Oz Museum in Wamego plays off of. Hollyn Smith, the gift shop coordinator at the Oz Museum, said the museum will celebrate the anniversary with "OztoberFest." Smith said the 75th anniversary shows how much of a legacy "The Wizard of Oz" is and how it still plays a big part in our community and society. Lizzy Langa, a freshman from Chesterfield, Mo., said, "It's nice to live in the state that coined the phrase, 'There's no place like home.'"
