+ THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2014 PAGE 11 + QUOTE OF THE DAY "I was young. I didn't know what I didn't know. Experience was the best teacher for me. Now I'm more comfortable." Brannen Greene about last season KUAthetics.com FACT OF THE DAY This is the first season since the 2007-2008 season where there hasn't been a player 7 feet or taller on the roster. KUAthletics.com TRIVIA OF THE DAY Q: In the past 10 years, how many international athletes has Kansas had on its roster? A: 3 (Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embidt) **KUAIWGICS.com** -KUAthletics.com THE MORNING BREW Men's basketball to reload, not dwell on the past This upcoming season is a season to reload; a season with less expectations in comparison to last season. This team is also very different than the team Kansas fielded last season. Seven players who were on the roster last year won't be suiting up for Kansas this season. Both Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid departed for the NBA. Naadir Tharpe and Andrew White III transferred out. Justin Wesley, Niko Roberts and Tarik Black finished their four years of eligibility. The freshmen coming in to attempt to fill their shoes are Cliff Alexander, Devonte' Graham, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and Kelly Oubre. No one is getting an overabundance of media attention, except for Mykhailiuk, and that's just a video of people trying to pronounce his name. Another teammate — junior Hunter Mickelson — is no longer secluded to the bench after transferring from Arkansas. Both Mickelson and sophomore Landen Lucas gained valuable experience during the summer that will help them fill the void left by Embiid. Mickelson played on Guy Rancourt's USA East Coast Basketball Team in Estonia and Finland. Lucas played for Athletes in Action in Estonia and Latvia. Now, the inexperienced freshmen from last year have a year of college experience under their belts. Frank Mason and Wayne Selden Jr. have their freshman year behind them, as do Conner Frankamp, Brannen Greene and Lucas. What's more, two of Kansas' freshmen, Alexander and Oubre, were ranked among the top 15 in the ESPN 100. As for leadership and passing the torch,it's likely that Mason will be a mentor to Graham, just as Tharpe was a mentor to Mason last season. The small but mighty group of upperclassmen have played in do-or-die situations that gave them vital game expertise. They know what it feels like to play when the expectations are insurmountable. The now-sophomores, who stayed to continue their collegiate careers, are familiar with the pressures of last season. They gained valuable experience, as well- valuable experience their younger counterparts will soon gain. The freshmen coming in aren't being bombarded by unrealistic expectations like those thrown around last season. They have a talented and experienced group of guys to help them along the way. Freeh, who led an investigation into the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State and issued a scathing report, was alone in his SUV and wearing a seatbelt when he drove off the road shortly after noon Monday, striking a mailbox and a row of shrubs before coming to a stop on the side of a tree, according to state police. A preliminary investigation found no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved, they said. The New Hampshire hospital where police say Freeh was taken is not releasing information about his condition. State police on Monday said he was "seriously injured." The accident happened in Barnard, a small town about 120 miles northwest of Boston. No one else was hurt. "The thoughts and prayers of the entire FBI remain with former Director Freeh and his family tonight," FBI Director James Comey said in a statement Monday. Freeh, 64, was a federal judge in New York before serving as FBI director from 1993 to 2001. He previously served six years as a special agent. He founded his consulting firm, Freeh Group International Solutions LLC, in 2007. In 2011, Penn State hired Freeh to examine the handling of child sex abuse complaints involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and to recommend changes aimed at preventing abuse. Following an eight-month, $6.5 million investigation, Freeh issued a blistering report contending that legendary head football coach Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials concealed what they knew about Sandusky's sexual abuse of children for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity. Sandusky was convicted in June 2012 on 45 criminal counts. Freen also has handled other high profile matters, including a bribery case involving the presidential election within FIFA, soccer's international governing body, and a review of the financial settlement program for Gulf Coast residents affected by the BP oil spill. 785-864-4358 CLASSIFIEDS@KANSAN.COM BPI BUILDING SERVICES Janitorial Position P/T.
