THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN PAGE 12 MONDAY AUGUST 25, 2014 QUOTE OF THE DAY "[Selbu] is highly talented. His biggest thing is to have confidence and know once he gets on that hardwood he's got to give 110 percent" Tony Allen, Memphis Grizzlies Shooting Guard (USA Today) FACT OF THE DAY In 2012, Josh Solby was named Co-MVP of the NBA Summer League along with Damian Lillard. NBA.com TRIVIA OF THE DAY Q: In Selby's tone season at Kansas, how far did the Jayhawks advance in the NCAA tournament? A: Elite Eight ESPN.com THE MORNING BREW Selby's long road back to the NBA Down two points with 40 seconds left against the University of Southern California, No. 3 Kansas was on the verge of losing its first game of the season and first game at Allen Fieldhouse in more than three-and-a-half years. After a timeout, Marcus Morris had a chance to tie the game, but his shot was off the mark. Markieff Morris gathered in the offensive rebound and kicked the ball back out. Then, it happened. Josh Selby happened. The freshman buried a dramatic 3-pointer — his fifth of the game — to put the Jayhawks up one. Selby led all scorsers with 21 points, and in an instant, he became a fan favorite. However, the rest of his career did not follow in such a storybook fashion. Prior to the 2010-11 college basketball season, Rivals.com named Josh By Scott Chasen @SChasenKU Selby the top recruit in the nation, ahead of players such as Kyrie Irving and Harrison Barnes. Many figured Selby would leave Kansas for the NBA Draft after one year, which he did despite the fact his season did not go as planned. Selby scored 15-plus points in four of his first five games as a Jayhawk, but would only reach that total one more time in his next 21 outings. Selby's draft stock plummeted toward the end of the year, as he went from being considered a top-10 pick to potentially going undrafted. Regardless, Selby declared for the 2011 NBA Draft, where the Memphis Grizzlies selected him with the No. 49 pick. Selby played in just 38 games over two years with the Grizzlies before being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Selby's time in Cleveland was sho lived, as he would released less than three months la' before playing ' single game. After failing make a retu the NBA, S bounced a the world, play- ing for the Qingdao Double Star Eagles in China and KK Cedevita in Croatia. However, Selby was not ready to let go of his dreams of being an NBA All-Star. "For the guys that say I'm done [in the NBA], I just tell them to sit back and watch," Selby said in a promotional YouTube video leading up to The Basketball Tournament, an event that he participated in. Now Josh Selby is headed off to Isael to play with Bnei ferzilya, following in ie footsteps of players ch as Ekke Udoh and Tucker, both of whom arned to the NBA after ending time with the club. s not the NBA, but I still get sh checks to provide for my " Selby said on his Instagram account. It may not be his first choice of where to play, Selby will have a chance to prove that he belongs in the NBA. After all, that's really all that Selby has ever asked for: a chance. With the first pick in the draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Wiggins, becoming Kansas' second-ever number one pick — the other was Danny Manning in 1988 by the Los Angeles Clippers. On Aug. 23, Wiggins was part of a three-team trade that sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Embiid's foot injury didn't dramatically affect his draft status, as the Philadelphia 76ers didn't let him fall past the third pick. He had foot surgery June 20, ruling him out for the first two months of the NBA season. Wiggins and Embiid became the first pair of Jayhawk teammates to go in the first three picks.
