Tennis team to serve up new season in Tulsa By Jason Hwang Kansan sportswriter DEREC LACIO/KANSAN the Kansas tennis team starts the 2001-2002 season today at the Tulsa Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. The tournament runs through Sunday. Last year, the Jayhawks had a seventh-place finish in the Big 12 Conference, with a 12-12 record, 4-7 in Big 12 play. The team lost to Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament last April in Waco, Texas. The team also was ranked No. 52 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Kilmeny Waterman, the team's second-year coach, said she had big expectations for the upcoming season. Junior Kim Lorenz works on her backhand during practice. The KU tennis team traveled to Tulsa, Okla., yesterday for the Tulsa Invitational tournament, which begins today. "We at least can get to the top six of the Big 12," Waterman said. "We need to get goals we can accomplish." The Jayhawks return six of last year's eight letter winners. They are seniors Cheryl Mallaiah and Christi Wagenaar, junior Kim Lorenz and sophomores Emily Haylock and twins Courtney and Kristen Steinbock. The two incoming freshmen, Paige Brown and Kristi Barnthouse, should contribute to the team as well, Waterman said. Barnthouse could help the team in the doubles lineup, Waterman said. She also said that Barnthouse, who is from Lea- Waterman said Brown was a solid player and played all summer in national tournaments. She said out of the entire team, Brown was the most prepared for fall play. wood, could use her local ties to the team's advantage. "Just being a Kansas kid is a big gain," Waterman said. "I want to have more people from the area on the team." Waterman said she thought this team would improve and become better known nationally. "We would like to get into the top 25, but top 40 is more realistic," Waterman said. "We have a very athletic team. "I hope to take each match slowly to get my game back together after injuring my knee last week," Haylock said. "I wish to get confidence and start playing better." She said she credited Waterman for the team's well-being. "Coach is a great person," Haylock said. "She is a coach on and off the court. She'll do anything to help you."
