Shoulder injury prompts Marlins pitcher to retire MIAMI—Florida Marlins right-hander Alex Fernandez retired yesterday after being sidelined almost two years with a shoulder injury that first surfaced during the 1997 plavoffs. The 32-year-old Fernandez pitched only 193 1/3 innings during the past four seasons. He won the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award in 1999, when he went 7-8 with a 3.38 ERA, but he has given up on another comeback attempt. He's been out since May 2000. "The day has come that I have to move on with my life," an emotional Fernandez said at a news conference. "It's kind of a depressing day for me." Fernandez's injury, a fully torn rotator cuff, was discovered after he lost Game 2 of the 1997 National League Championship Series against Atlanta. Even then, the injury was regarded as career-threatening and he watched from the bench with a mixture of frustration and elation as the Marlins won the World Series. Fernandez, a Cuban American who grew up in Miami, finished 107-87 with a 3.74 ERA in 263 games. In seven seasons as a workhorse for the Chicago White Sox, Fernandez was never on the disabled list, which is one reason Florida signed him to a five-year, $35 million deal before the 1997 season. He went 28-24 for the Marlins. Insurance money has covered much of Fernandez's salary during the time he has been sidelined. Contact Domoney at 864-4858 Cubs' pitching brings win, but it might be too late The Associated Press PITTSBURGH — The Chicago Cubs finally got what they've needed for more than a week — a well-pitched game. What they must be wondering is whether it came too late to matter. Ricky Gutierrez had three hits and drove in two runs and the Cubs built a six-run lead behind rookie Juan Cruz in beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4 last night, ending a four-game losing streak. Cruz (3-1) was working on a three-hit shutout until former Cubs outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr.'s three-run, pinch-hit homer in the seventh Unlike Monday, when the Cubs squandered a 5-0 lead and lost 7-6 on a homer by Matthews, their bullpen held on this time. David Weathers got out of the seventh despite allowing two more hits, Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless eighth and Jeff Fassero finished. "We could not give up another lead," manager Don Baylor said. hopefully we can make a run at the wild card." If already might be — the Cubs (82-70) trail both St. Louis and San Francisco in the wild card standings — but they still have made a significant improvement from last year's 98-loss season. The Cubs had lost 10 to 14 of tol 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the NL wild card race. "That first game here hurt everybody. It was a big blow to us. We had to win today," Gutierrez said. "We're going home for 10 days and Cruz, considered the Cubs' top pitching prospect, held the Pirates to three singles across the first six innings until tiring in the seventh, when he was lifted after throwing 101 pitches in the longest of his six starts. The Cubs, playing their final road game of the season, opened a 2-0 lead in the first as Bronson Arroyo (4-7) walked two around Michael Tucker's bunt single, Stairs' sacrifice fly and Gutierrez's RBI single. Arroyo gave up four hits and three runs in four innings. "Physically, his stuff was not there. Mentally, he wasn't into the game out there," manager Lloyd McClendon said. Gutierrez doubled and scored on Cruz's sacrifice bunt in the fourth, and had another RBI single in the sixth following Stairs' leadoff double. Bill Mueller added a run-scoring single and Tucker had an RBI double in the three-run inning against reliever Joe Beimel. Tucker also had an RBI grounder in the eighth and Roosevelt Brown had an RBI pinch double in the ninth. The Pirates (58-95) must win at least five of nine on a season-ending road trip to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1985 and the seventh in the franchise's 115-season history McGwire breaks slump with 2 homers The Associated Press HOUSTON — Mark McGwire broke out of a slump with two home runs and Darryl Kile allowed four hits in seven shutout innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Houston Astros 5-1 last night. The victory was St. Louis' second in a row over the Astros and pulled the Cardinals within 3 1/2 games of Houston in the NL Central Division. St. Louis started the day with a three-game lead over San Francisco in the wild card race. Harrisets McGwire gave Kile a boost with his 26th homer in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead. McGwire's two-run, 418-foot blast bounced on the train tracks atop the left-field fence and out of Enron Field. Before hitting his first homer, McGwire was 1-for-19 with 10 strikeouts in his previous 20 at-bats, including strikeouts in his first two at-bats yesterday. McGwire went 2-for-4 and raised his season average to .185. McGwire added a solo homer off Octavio Dotel in the eighth for his third multi-home-run game this season and the 67th of his career. McGwire's 581st career home run was the first homer allowed by Dotel since the Dodgers' Tim Bogar hit one on June 3. Kile, who had lost three of his previous four decisions, escaped the fourth after Julio Lugo reached on an infield hit and Jeff Bagwell walked to start the inning. Kile struck out Lance Berkman and Richard Hidalgo and Orlando Merced flew out. Kile struck out 10 and walked two. Pinch-hitter J.D. Drew's sacrifice fly scored a run for the Cardinals in the seventh. Ron Villone (6-8) didn't allow a hit until Jim Edmonds' one-out double in the fourth. Craig Paquette followed with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Jeff Bagwell's 38th homer in the ninth off of T.J. Mathews ended the shutout. $5.75 Dinner Buffet all-you-can-eat Friday, Saturday, Sunday Offer End September 11,2 Specials Seafood including shrimp, crab legs, mussels, duck and more.
