TUESDAY,SEPT.25,2001 THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN - 7A HOROSCOPES Today's Birthday (Sept. 25). Something you've been putting up with at home gets more annoying this year. Do you need counseling? More closets? Another bathroom? Talk with loved ones near and far. They'll delight in giving you their opinions, and some of them will even help you solve the problem once and for all. SPORTS Aries (March 21-April 19). Today is a 6. In your ongoing quest for advancement, you have to make choices. Taking on more responsibility at work means less time for fixing up your place, relaxing in front of the TV or spending time with your sweetheart. New factors that pop up later this week affect your choices. Gemini (May 21-June 21). Today is a 7. Are you shuffling money around, robbing Peter to pay Paul? There are ways to live happily within your budget. The most obvious is to simply stop wanting stuff. But where's the fun in that? Think of something else. Taurus (April 20-May 20). Today is a 7. What you're learning may contradict what you already knew, so don't make assumptions in work-related matters. Romance should proceed more smoothly if you stay home tonight. Traveling gets complicated. Cancer (June 22-July 22). Today is a 7. Just because the other person is yelling louder doesn't mean he's right. If he's wrong, gently but firmly tell him so. Your opinion is just as valid. Compromise will work. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22). Today is a 6. Take on an extra assignment, but don't say much about it. It could turn out to be harder than you thought but still a valuable learning experience. Is it worth the trouble? Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Today is a 7. Your sweetheart has some strong ideas about what you should do. But will this person's agenda really be best for you? Add up the numbers and take all the time you need. You'll achieve success, but on your own terms and at your own speed. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22). Today is a 7. Watch what you say. A roommate may be highly sensitive. You hate to hurt people's feelings, but it could happen. If you think the other person was just waiting for something to be upset about, you're right. The less said, the better. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21). Today is a 7. Keep studying. Dig deep to find the information you need. Some of it may contradict what you've been told. This makes the job more interesting. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Today is a 7. There's money to be made, but communications could become garbled. Deliver orders you've received, and collect money you're owed. Don't make cold calls now; too many people won't want to talk. Instead, do what you already know needs to be done. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Today is a 7. You're known to be direct and honest, but you also can be pretty darned blunt. If folks don't have your sense of humor, they can sometimes be offended, as you well know. Go easy. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20). Today is a 7. A fool and his or her money are soon parted. Don't let that be you. Just because others take risks, it doesn't mean you should. For financial advice, consult wealthy friends you've known for a long time. Then, leave your savings in a safe place. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Today is a 6. Travel isn't a good idea for most of today and tomorrow. Besides, somebody important may be trying to make contact. If you're running around, they won't be able to find you. At the very least, check your answering machine often. Rested Oklahoma to open season against Wildcats The Associated Press DALLAS — No. 3 Oklahoma will be well-rested for its Big 12 opener against No. 11 Kansas State, the team it had to beat twice last year before winning the national championship. But will the Sooners (3-0) be sharp after two straight Saturdays without games? After the terrorist attacks led to the postponement of all I-A games on Sept. 15, Oklahoma had a scheduled open date last weekend. The Sooners know they have to win the Big 12 before they can even think about defending their national title. And they will have a quick indication if both of those are possible, with No.5 Texas (3-0) waiting the week after K-State (2-0). Oklahoma and Kansas State play the highlight game on a weekend when Big 12 plays into full swing. "It may have been a problem if we had played just one or two games, but we've played three games," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "The extra time off, I believe it has helped us. Guys are chomping at the bit to play, we have practiced hard and concentrated on K-State. Hopefully, it will help us." It was against the Longhorns and Wildcats last year that Oklahoma began its impressive October romp against three consecutive ranked teams. That propelled the Sooners to the No.1 ranking and the eventual national title after they beat Kansas State again in the Big 12 championship game. Baylor plays at Iowa State, Nebraska goes to Missouri, and Texas Tech plays at Texas. There are two non-conference "The extra time off, I believe it has helped us. Guys are chomping at the bit to play, we have practiced hard and concentrated on K-State. Hopefully, it will help us." Bob Stoops He mixed tough — and sometimes fun practices with extra downtime for his players. The Hurricanes opened the season with lopsided victories at Penn State and against Rutgers, outsourcing them 94-7. Then they had their game against No.13 Washington postponed until Nov.24 because of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. "It's so rare during the season to get time to do stuff you like to do off the field," Dorsey said yesterday. "We've had time to relax and reflect on where we've been and where we want to go." "Are we concerned about being rusty with a 19-day layoff? There's no doubt about it," Coker said. "We were in a pretty good rhythm, playing pretty well, and we were healthy. With the layoff, we'll see." Miami was idle Saturday, giving the Hurricanes almost three weeks between games. First-year Hurricanes coach Larry Coker tried to keep the layoff from becoming a distraction. He said he hoped the top-ranked Hurricanes, returning from a bye week and a 19-day layoff, were much sharper Thursday night against Pittsburgh. match ups, with Texas A&M playing Notre Dame and Oklahoma State playing host to Division I-AA Northwestern State, which replaces the Cowboys' game against Northern Arizona that was canceled Sept. 15. While Stoops was content with having a two-week break, K-State coach Bill Snyder was glad his team got back on the field last weekend. The Wildcats beat New Mexico State 64-0 in their delayed home opener. Bob Stoops Oklahoma football coach "Obviously, they'd love to have an opportunity to atone for those losses, but that's never been our approach. Motivation is something that is an individual thing. It's important for each individual to be as well-motivated as he can during the course of a week and for a game. "It feels like we are a long way into the season, but it's only two games," he said. No.2 Florida hopes weeks off won't lead to an upset loss The Associated Press CORALGABLES, Fla. — With a second consecutive Saturday off, Miami Hurricanes quarterback Ken Dorsey decided to play golf for the first time since last spring. "I was rusty — downright pathetic," Dorsev said.
