Beta Theta Pi scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the game, and won by one point. The Associated Press NEW YORK — With the New York Mets just one strike from a three-game sweep that would have raised their once improbable playoff hopes, Armando Benitez let it all come apart. Brian Jordan hit a two-run homer to start a three-run ninth inning, then hit a go-ahead home run in the 11th as the Atlanta Braves escaped with a 5-4 victory yesterday that kept them in the NL East lead. B. J. Surhoff chased Benitez with a tying single, ending a streak of 17 consecutive save conversions for the reliever. It was a stunning turn for the Mets, who had been riding high on emotion following the World Trade Center terrorist attacks and had been on the verge of their first sweep of Atlanta in 11 years. They were about to close within 2 1/2 games of the Braves and two of the second-place Phillies, but just minutes after Benitez wasted his lead, Travis Lee hit a two-out homer in the ninth that tied Philadelphia's game against Florida, and the Phillies won 5-4 in 10 innings. The Mets, who have captured New York's hearts by giving time, money and soothing words to the victims of the terrorist attacks, had gone 22-5 since Aug. 17, cutting 10 games from their deficit. But Jordan stopped them with his second multihomer game this season, the 11th of his career. The second drive came off Jerrod Riggan (3-3). John Smoltz (3-3) got the win with three innings, leaving the Braves a half-game ahead of the Phillies and the Mets 4 1/2 back with two weeks left to play Mets players once again put aside their regular caps and wore hats honoring the police, firefighters and medical workers who have been leading the recovery effort at the Trade Center. And New York said it will continue the practice for the remainder of the season. Fans had mocked the Braves with tomahawk chops in the eighth inning and serenaded Atlanta — which has won nine straight division titles — with chants of "Swee! Swee!" Jay Payton put the Mets ahead in the second with an RBI single off Tom Glavine, and Joe McEwing made it 2-0 when he sprinted around the bases after his third-inning homer. Al Leiter, 4-0 in six starts since Aug.15, allowed just three hits in eight innings and struck out eight. He took a one-hit shutout into the seventh before allowing his first run on Ken Caminiti's two-run RBI double. New York added two runs in the eighth off Rudy Seanez, who threw a wild pitch that set up Todd Zeile's RBI single, then threw another wild pitch that allowed Mike Piazza to score from third. The Mets haven't swept the Braves since a two-game series on April 24-25, 1990. New York's last three-game sweep of Atlanta was from May 25-25, 1980. The Mets also swept a four-game series from July 20-23, 1989. The Associated Press Inept Vikings offense falls to Bears CHICAGO — The Chicago Bears will gladly take a win over the Minnesota Vikings, no matter how uvel it is. Marcus Robinson caught a 24-yard scoring pass as the Bears rallied for two touchdowns in the last 10 minutes yesterday to beat the Vikings 17-10. It was the Bears' sixth victory in the last 20 tries against the Vikings. Daunte Culpepper threw for two touchdowns, but the extra week off wasn't enough to fix the Vikings' offensive woes. The Vikings offense was never in sync opening week, when they were upset at home by Carolina. They spent the week off, when all games were postponed after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, trying to find some answers. Randy Moss wasn't a factor for a second straight game, and Cris Carter was visibly frustrated by Minnesota's ineptitude. The height of frustration came with 6:43 left in the game, when the Vikings failed on a fake punt. Needing just two yards and having two downs to do it, Bennett rushed for a yard and then no gain. The Bears got off to a poor start, crossing midfield only once in the first half and managing just seven yards rushing. They were down 10-0 midway through the third when Miller finally got them into a groove. Paul Edinger got it started, kicking a 45-yard field goal to cut Minnesota's lead to 10-3. Chicago had a chance to tie the game early in the fourth, but Miller's pass to Robinson was picked off in the end zone. The Bears (1-1) got it right on the next try. Starting at their 46, they got a break on an offsides call. After a short run by Allen, Miller went to Booker again. He caught the ball at the 11, and leaped sideways into the end zone to tie the game at 10. Allen rushed for 11 yards and Miller found Booker on a 9-yard pass. It was the Bears' first touch down of the season. 2019年第一季度业绩预告 NOW OPEN 1023 Massachusetts We have a complete line of guitars and drums. Guitars starting at $89. 749-3700 Open 10-7 six days a week.
