JAY BY MARIO GONZALF7 Soccer team readies for challenges Jayhawks travels to Florida for two showdowns aim to improve By Ryan Wood Kansan sportswriter Two big challenges await the Kansas soccer team in Florida this weekend. In Florida the week before The Jayhawks (3-1) play at 7 p.m. CDT tonight in Tallahassee, Fla., against 17th-ranked Florida State before heading to Orlando for a game Sunday against Central Florida. Kansas has not played since capturing the championship at the San Diego State Invitational on Sept. 9. Despite coming away with two wins and a title in California, coach Mark Francis said he saw room for improvement. "To be honest, we really didn't play all that well in San Diego, and we still came away with two wins," Francis said. "We need to step it up a little bit." Florida State brings a 3-2 record into tonight's showdown, coming off a 3-2 upset victory of No. 7 Clemson in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Florida State's losses this season came against two of the nation's top teams, No.2 University of Portland and No.5 Santa Clara. Orlando, Fla., to play Central Florida. The Golden Knights (3-2) last played on Monday, losing 3-2 to Florida Atlantic. Francis said although the team has not played for nearly two weeks, he was not worried about how the team would perform this weekend. "Once they start, they should be OK," he said. Once they sat at St. Louis University and Drury were postponed last weekend after last week's terrorist attacks. Kansas and St. Louis were scheduled to make up their game on Tuesday, but that game was also postponed to allow the team to accompany senior midfielder Melanie Schroeder to her father's funeral in Stillwater, Minn. Francis said it was important that the team perform well in Florida before Big 12 Conference play kicked off next weekend. Notes "The main thing is to have a couple of good performances," Francis said. "We need to get back on track after everything that's gone on." Kansas opens its conference schedule next weekend. It plays a Friday match at home against Oklahoma before traveling to Stillwater, Okla., to play Oklahoma State on Sunday. The Jayhawks have never played against Florida State or Central Florida.
