6A = THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN SPORTS FRIDAY, SEPT. 21, 2001 Lacrosse team gears up for season By Jessica Scott Kansan sportswriter When Amy Fortney arrived for her first KU lacrosse practice, she was terrified. "The first day of practice I came into the parking lot and just drove around," Fortney said. "I didn't even know if I wanted to stop." Three years later, Fortney, Overland Park senior, is the captain of the Kansas women's lacrosse team. "Laerosse is a great sport for women," Fortney said. "It gives us lots of power." With the team in only its fifth year of existence, Coach David Wiley said he eagerly awaited the fall season. "In the fall we are allowed to play on five dates because of NCAA regulations," said Wiley, who is also the program coordinator for the Office of Study Abroad. "The league season begins in the spring, and we're allowed a seven-game minimum in the months of March and April." Lacrosse, a club sport, is open to any female student who attends practice regularly. No one is cut, and everyone has an equal chance to play. Wiley said lacrosse was a great opportunity for former high school athletes to stay involved and be a part of the University. This year's roster is made up of about 20 women who practice three times a week. Each year, Kansas, a member of a six-team league, plays Truman State, Iowa, Knox College, Washington University in St. Louis and rival Missouri. The Jayhawks look forward to being matched up against the Tigers, a team that has beat them three straight times, Fortney said. "Every year they're incredibly dirty," she said. "In the past they've had two or three of the least pleasant people that I've ever been involved with." However, Kansas has found success against another Big 12 Conference school, Wiley said. "I'm the only coach at KU to put a K-State sport out of business," he said. "We beat them 9-2 in the first game, and they never played again." The Jayhawks' first game is Sunday, Oct. 7, at Truman State. A match against Washington University and Truman State is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, at home. Until then, the women continue practicing a sport they love. Contact Scott at 864-4858. Volleyball team plays to win By Steve Laurenzo Kansan sportswriter The Kansas volleyball team will aim to extend its winning streak tomorrow night against a struggling Oklahoma squad. The Sooners were 1-8 this season going into last night's match against Southern Methodist. A win would extend the Jayhawks' best start on record to 11-0 in their first Big 12 Conference road game, at 7 p.m. at the OU Field House in Norman, Okla. Kansas set the program record of 10-0 Wednesday night with a win against the Iowa State Cyclones. Coach Ray Bechard said he and his team looked forward to establishing themselves on the road. "It would give us a lot of confidence to get a road win," Bechard said. "Any time you can win on the road in this conference it's a big thing." Like the Jayhawks' last two opponents, UMKC and Iowa State, the Sooners are a young team that stumbled last season. But the Jayhawks learned from those last two games that an opponent's losing record doesn't always signal an easy win. The Jayhawks lost a game in of those two matches and had to fight hard to win them. Bechard is approaching the match as he would any other, "We'll be prepared," Bechard said. "I think we will give a good effort and hopefully have some luck on Saturday." Junior middle blocker Kylie Thomas said the Sooners lost some valuable seniors last year but still had a lot of talent. "They had some really good young players last year," Thomas said. "They'll be a better team than last year." Oklahoma leads the overall series with the Jayhawks, 37-16-1. But Bechard has a 6-0 record against Oklahoma since he came to Kansas in 1998. The Sooners lost their only other conference game against Kansas State. The Wildcats beat the Sooners in three games (30-13, 30-16, 30-23). Contact Laurenzo at 864-4858.
