GONGFARMER BY RANDY REGIER Lifehouse shines with originality By Kyle Rohde Jayplay writer Friday night at the University of Missouri's Jesse Auditorium, the band Lifehouse showed a capacity crowd of 3,000 why it's the most promising modern rock band since Creed. Opening for Lifehouse was Michelle Branch, followed by The Calling. All three bands played a similar style of music, but by the end of the concert it was easy to see why Lifehouse headlined the event. Although Michelle Branch and The Calling both played entertaining music without any glaring faults, they shared a problem—their songs were too much alike. Any suggestion of Lifehouse having an originality problem were alleviated early by the band's obvious versatility. Nearly every song was different. "Sick Cycle Carousel," the opening song, began with lead singer and rhythm guitarist Jason Wade using a hand tambourine. Other songs included solos by bassist Sergio Andrade, which were far more pleasing and unique than the clashing sound created by The Calling. The definite high point of the evening was "Breathing," a lyrically touching song about missing a loved one, which led into the band's chart-topping song, "Hanging By A Moment." Between the two songs was a beautiful solo by Andrade, which gave the listener a glimpse of the band's potential. The intensity and power of Andrade's bass provided a striking contrast to the soft rock of "Breathing." This dichotomy showed Lifehouse's ability to vary the pace and style of its music, a skill that will keep the band's sound from becoming stagnant. "Hanging by a Moment" is the band's best single; it's no coincidence that this is the song that propelled the band to stardom. The audience, singing along with Wade through the song, reinforced its popularity. Litenouse decided to play one more song before bowing off the stage. After a standing ovation, the band returned to play three more songs for an unseated, cheering crowd. The second encore began with Wade asking the audience to be silent, as the song was dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attacks. He proceeded to deliver a moving solo. After the finale, "Quasimodo," the band left the stage to yet another roaring ovation. write an overdose of guitars masked the lead singers voices in Michelle Branch and The Calling, Jason Wade's talent and versatility were constantly showcased. His powerful voice echoed of Creed's Scott Stapp and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. With comparisons such as those, Lifehouse will surely emerge as one of today's biggest bands.
