THURSDAY,SEPT.20,2001 ENTERTAINMENT THEUNIVERSITYDAILYKANSAN • 3B Modern setting gives 'O' more reality Shakespeare play's retelling brings tale of betrayal to present O is based on William Shakespeare's tragic play Othello, which chronicles the demise of a young man who cannot come to grip with his own jealousy. The movie adapts the story from the play to modern times and takes place at a ritzy Southern private school. The main character is Odin James (Mekhi Phifer), the only black student at the school and a star basketball player, adored by teammates and recruited by the nation's top universities. His success doesn't set well with teammate Hugo Goulding (Josh Hartnett), who resents all the attention Odin receives, and Goulding's father, the team's head coach, seems to care more for Odin than his son. At a school pep rally, Coach Goulding presents Odin with the team's MVP award and announces to the crowd that "I love him like my own son." a sentiment that further enrages Hugo. Odin accepts the award on one condition: fellow teammate Michael Casio is named comVP. Hugo, thinking the award should be his, is consumed by hatred and secretly plots revenge against Odin. Posing as a friend, Hugo seeks to break up Odin's relationship with his girlfriend Desi Brable (Julia Stiles) by filling Odin's mind with thoughts that she is cheating on him with Michael. Commentary Brandon Stinnett Movie Reviewer jayplay@kansan.com Hugo produces phony evidence of Desi's alleged cheating, which Odin, blinded by jealousy, accepts as the truth. Odin believes Hugo's lies and accuses Desi of sleeping with Michael behind his back, an accusation that leads to a horrible chain of events that ultimately end in violent and horrific tragedy. $O$ is a powerful movie about jealousy and love, and the influence sports, such as basketball, have on young lives. It tells the story of a tragedy among kids at school, who are no different than kids found at most high schools. The characters all are convincing, which is testament to powerful performances by the actors. O was slated for release a couple years ago around the same time of the Columbine school shootings. Miramax elected to delay the release out of fear that the violent subject matter would disturb audiences affected by the tragedy. Ironically, O's release came just before the biggest tragedy in American history. Watching it now, less than two weeks after the terrorist attacks on Washington, D.C., and New York, 0 ★★★ Great movie of the week: SayAnything, Cameron Crowe's directorial debut that follows the ups and downs in a relationship between two passionate young people. It does something that few movies about high school students rarely do: it treats them as real people. John Cusack stars as Lloyd Dobler, a person whose only real aspiration in life is to be with Diane Court (lone Skye). It's a touching and funny film that doesn't seem out of date despite its 1989 release. Bad movie of the week: The Mummy. This lame Indiana Jones ripoff tries earnestly to be both suspenseful and funny. It succeeds at neither. I was too busy laughing at the dreadfully cheesy dialogue and the ridiculous talking mummy to pay attention to what was actually going on. makes the film's violence harder to stomach. Perhaps violence in movies that audiences ordinarily wouldn't give a second thought seems a little too real during times of actual terror and violence. Still, O is a quality movie that makes a convincing statement about the power of love and deceit among youth.
