TUESDAY,SEPT.18,2001 NEWS THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN = 5A KU professor translates ancient Greek poet By Eve Lamborn Kansan staff writer Stanley Lombardo has read and taught the poetry of Sapho for years. But by next year, Lombardo will be able to read and teach his personal translation of the Greek poet. Lombardo, professor of classics, recently finished a translation of a volume of Sappho's poetry and expects it to be published in April. Lombardo's other translations include Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Both translations were reviewed in The New York Times. It was Homer's works that got Lombardo interested in translating Greek poetry, when he read them as an undergraduate in the 1960s. "I wanted to lock eyebrows with Homer by translating him and bringing him to life in English," he said. He said Sappho's poetry was exquisitely crafted, and his own feelings about her poetry influenced his translation. "It's a personal, poetic response to a precious body of poetry," he said. "She portrays the depths of human passion. It's a very pure kind of poetry." Pamela Gordon, professor of classics, wrote the introduction for the volume. She said she enjoyed collaborating with Lombardo. "It's really exciting to be working with a colleague who's a nationally recognized and dearly loved translator." she said. According to Gordon's introduction, Sappho was a Greek poet who lived during the late 7th and early 6th centuries, B.C. Most of her poetry survives in fragments, many of which were lost for more than a millennium and only recently rediscovered. Gordon said that Lombardo translated all of the fragments consisting of more than a few words. "We're always searching for her," Gordon said. "When we find a tiny fragment, the search seems worthwhile." Ann Moser, Hemingford, Neb., junior, said she had just read Lombardo's translation of Iliad as part of her Western Civilization class. "I really liked it," she said of the translation. "I always expected it to be harder to read, but it wasn't hard at all." Lombardo said his next project would be a translation of Virgil's Aeneid, and the translation would take him about three years. AARON LINDBERG/KANSAN Stanley Lombardo, professor of classics, is publishing another volume of translated ancient Greek poetry this fall. Lombardo has translated Iliad and Odyssey.
