8E θ = THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN SPORTS MONDAY,SEPT.17,2001 Kansas men's golf team takes month-long break AARON SHOWALTER/KANSAN Senior golfer Travis Hurst is taking a month-long break from competitive play, along with the rest of his team. Canceled tourney leaves way for extra qualifying rounds By John Domoney Kansan sportswriter The Kansas men's golf team took the approach of most sports teams in the aftermath of Tuesday's terrorist attacks. Having finished the Ridges Intercollegiate tournament, Sept. 8-9, they are taking a month-long break in the middle of their fall schedule. Last Friday the Jayhawks decided not to travel to the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. Kansas, however, won't be missing any action. The tournament, which was set to begin play today and finish tomorrow, was postponed this weekend because of the number of teams from the 15 team field that called the University of Toledo, the host school, to cancel. Although there has been no date announced for the tournament, coach Ross Randall said the officials would look to play the tournament at a later date. "They're trying to find a date for all 15 teams but that's impossible," Randall said. "It could possibly be moved to mid-October but that depends on the weather and if the course is open." The decision not to travel to the tournament was a disappointment for the team. But Randall said he understood the decision because of the circumstances. "I'm not surprised and under the circumstances I understand it." Randall said. The team was scheduled to play at the Inverness Golf Club, which was ranked as the 38th best golf course in the country in the September issue of Golf Magazine. As the team faces a layoff before it returns to action Oct. 8-9 in the Purina-Missouri Bluffs Classic, it will begin a lengthy stretch of qualifying rounds and practice. Randall sees the practice time as an opportunity for the Jay. "I'm a believer in playing and competing rather than practicing." Ross Randall Kansas golf coach hawks to strengthen their games, but he would rather have his team competing in tournaments. "I'm a believer in playing and competing rather than practicing," Randall said. Since Kansas won't be playing in any tournaments soon, they will conduct their qualifying rounds around the Kansas City area. This will give them time to play at courses other than Alva- mar Golf Course, Kansas' home course. "It's good to see other courses because it's like a tournament in itself when not everybody has had a look at the course." Randall said. Many of the Jayhawks are looking forward to their break as they are coming off summers when most of them played golf everyday. "Most of us have had a long summer, and we came right into the school year," senior Travis Hurst said. "It'll relax us a little bit, and hopefully by the next tournament we'll be ready to go."
